we're an nyc based art collective that owns and operates a gallery with two physical locations in the les. in terms of advice i'd say only work with people you genuinely like or that seem like good people. also don't be closed off to showing new people's work, the fine art world is soooo exclusive and gross and pretentious and it can be really easy to fall into perpetuating those same values so we think it's really important to try and stay as open as possible. for example if someone asks how they can show their work at your gallery actually tell them and review their work with a genuine interest. and if possible start the gallery with your friends, it makes the whole thing a lot easier :)

Been off this app lately cuz ive been busy opening an art gallery in my hometown (San Diego) called Deixis Gallery! Been such a wonderful experience so far. It’s so beautiful to see how community comes together to help with every step along the way. Friends came by and helped paint, do construction, a friend of mine built us some benches from scratch, and a bunch of amazing artists participated in the inaugural exhibition. So hyped, truly recommend. And shout out to allstnyc for the encouragement back when I first posted an ask about opening a gallery! 🤞🏿🤞🏿🤞🏿also if you find yourself in San Diego, make sure to stop by! @deixisgallery

where i am, there’s a big open gallery art event the first saturday of the month. you can just walk from gallery to gallery downtown for the evening. it’s easy and encouraged to talk to a gallery manager. they are there to tell people about the space, so you can walk up and literally say “tell me about this place!” and off they go. i often find that an artist or two is hanging around them as well at which point you can strike convos ab their experiences and inspiration and all that also helps to drag a friend or two so it’s not as much holding a drink in the corner, but remember most everyone who goes to events is there for the social aspect, and is more than willing to chat with like minded people. if someone looks interested in something you find interesting, just ask them about it (:

my ideal career path is to be a museum curator however it has come into my brain recently that a museum can be very capitalistic, be made for the rich.. so i host my own galleries, in homes, to bring together local art, free to submit free to visit.. it feels more personal this way

disregard digital validation and don't let numbers be a gauge of how well you're doing. starting out with a small and loyal reader base is way more important than having a million subscribers
