Vinte Palavras is the debut album of Lesbian Afro-Brazillian artist Cátia de França. Not only a singer and composer, Cátia is a multi-instrumentist, skilled in the flute, accordion, and percusion, as well as a teacher and writer. In many of her songs you can listen a triangle defining the pace along with a quick acoustic guitar, which are marks of the Brazillian Northeast popular music. Her lyrics are known for being incredibly sophisticated with references to literature and global folklore. You can also sense her dialogue with Tropicalist music with the incorporation of psychodelic style and eletric guitar, noticiable right in the first song O Bonde, you quickly know this is not any Forró album. Actually, the songs featured are extremaly diverse, she goes from songs that sound like spoken word with strong guitar riffs in the backround, to mystical flute melodies guided by high notes, and when you least expect you are back listening to a traditional Baião. Highlights: O Bonde, Djaniras and Kukukaya

It's June! As winter starts in Brazil we enter the season of "Festa Junina" In February I did something similar with Samba albuns in celebration of Carnaval, now it's "Festa Junina" season so Forró it is. I like doing these not only to share to other people but also so dedicate some time to research and listen to traditional Brazilian sounds. Forró is kind of an umbrella term that encompasses Xote, Baião e Xaxado, and a few others, all associated with Northeastern dancing parties. Like samba is a genre that have a long history and traditions, but has adapted itself throughout generations. I decided to start the week with the most important release for the genre by Luiz Gonzaga, not only a great singer and performer, he is almost a sort of anthropologist as he spend most of his twenties traveling across the country, but mostly the Northeast. He made Northeastern folk music, especially Baião popular among audiences of urban areas as his career took of in the capital at that time, Rio de Janeiro. The themes os the lyrics of the songs follow the traditions of Forró at that time, which includes manual labor, local nature elements, some gender stereotypes, and most importantly missing home as the 1950's were the years of major industrialization in Brazil and many workers from the Northeast would migrate to the southeast cities looking for jobs. The songs feature intrumets that would be the base of the genre: accordion, pipe and triangle. Highlights: Asa Branca (his most famous compositions),
