Whether traveling solo or with the collegiate homies, this train ride is so communal feeling because everyone looks out those windows. One is not living if you’re not staring out the window. You ride right past the Hudson River, which twinkles with the sunlight and dances its scenic way into your heart. Highly recommend with a good album, such as Clairo’s “Charm”of English Teacher’s “This Could Be Texas” (even though that fall foliage makes certain you’re certainly not in Texas).

you can see on one side the sunset in one large beautiful glow backing the city image , and on the other side you can also see the apposite roseate light in lozenges against the beams of the bridge. looking back and forth is pleasant, and easy if seated perpendicular to the walls of the train. and soon after getting off the train to meet adrian in chinatown you will no longer remember seeing this and being happy until the next morning when on the N train slightly post-sunrise reforming the association from a similar experience on the same bridge

I don’t believe I’ve ever been, but wow you can see such nice bodies of waters/sailboats/nice houses out the window. Almost makes up for the fact that the Northeast Corridor no longer makes any geographical sense and the train lines are on the verge of falling apart.

In pre-21st century movies and media, we always see couples that go to bed, independently read their books, and once sleepy, clap off the lights and peacefully retire to sleep. Maybe there’s a reason this trope is so common! Maybe couples who read together, sleep together!! Reading before bed regulates my brain and body in ways I did not know were possible. Screens are bad for you, specifically and especially before bedtime… who knew! And with a good nights sleep I have so much energy to do things, including but not limited to more reading.

Collecting a stack of printed takeout menus from local restaurants is equivalent to finding community in your town/city. I love to get off my phone and flip through a printed menu when deciding what to order for dinner, appreciating the graphic design choices and the hometown staples on each menu. And they are only wasteful if you waste them! What great material for emergency note-taking, for adorning your fridge, for COLLAGING! Oh my goodness what great and meaningful content organically exists in a printed takeout menu from your favorite local spot.

Mr. Cassavetes is the man who has made me cry the most, isn’t that saying something! Starting ten minutes into the 2.5 hour-long film, I felt my heart slowly sink into my stomach, and by the end I was claustrophobic with such feelings of hopelessness, confusion, and the sting of reality. I cried myself to sleep, I didn’t know what else to do with myself! A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE is worth a watch for all these reasons, and for Gena Rowland’s unmatched and masterful performance, and for these reasons is a movie I must never watch again. Brava!
