Miasma: an unpleasant or unhealthy smell or vapour. Curiously, the same word exists in Spanish but instead of a general odor, is focused on a malignant smell that was believed to emanate from sick bodies, corrupt matter and stagnant water, which in my opinion is more specific. Learned from: the book synopsis to Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake.
