one of the most genuinely moving video essays i’ve ever seen. it’s only 15 minutes but i find myself thinking about it on my walks all the time

ive loved this youtube video since 2022 when i found it. it showed me the album bitches brew by miles davis when no one fucking told me what that album was even tho its like super popular. truly one of my favorite videos of all time, if not THE best video of all time. i love video essays but i dont give a fuck about your spooky story of a criminal, ghost, spirit, etc. i want art, music, movies, history, politics, shit we live for, not things were gonna die knowing and regret that we only know those things instead of findind the true purpose of life and beyond (sorry i got a lil too poetic there)

i’m sure there’s a doc i’ve seen before this one where i “learned more” or whatever but at least in recent memory this one feels like an all-timer; the subject matter is interesting, the interviews are engaging, the found footage is immaculate, and the graphics feel so on-theme that you kinda forget that someone drew that, and that it wasn’t something akin to found footage. also just manages the tone really, really well — the edit tells the story in a way that feels really intuitive and leaves you at the end with a sense of melancholy that you finished it because you just want it to keep going

its a fucking masterpiece and perfectly encapsulates the time in a wholistic but also deeply individual and vulnerable way

spent the last two weeks working on an interactive guide, recommendations database, and digital library (link depot) to help get people off of social media. the first draft is done now, and it's at the link to this post.
it's still very much a work in progress (the library is especially thin atm) - which is why i wanted to share it here before unleashing it upon my IRL friends and the general public. i welcome any and all feedback, bug reports, and suggestions for things to add. i will be pushing updates to it out like a madman in the coming weeks, so be sure to check back every so often to see new additions to the database and library.
additionally, i am still on the hunt for newsletters from local venues / community organizations / magazines / newspapers, etc. the only cities i have remotely covered so far are nyc, orlando, denver, brisbane, and little bits of worcester and chicago. if you know anything in your area that fits the bill, send it my way!
