spent the last two weeks working on an interactive guide, recommendations database, and digital library (link depot) to help get people off of social media. the first draft is done now, and it's at the link to this post. it's still very much a work in progress (the library is especially thin atm) - which is why i wanted to share it here before unleashing it upon my IRL friends and the general public. i welcome any and all feedback, bug reports, and suggestions for things to add. i will be pushing updates to it out like a madman in the coming weeks, so be sure to check back every so often to see new additions to the database and library. additionally, i am still on the hunt for newsletters from local venues / community organizations / magazines / newspapers, etc. the only cities i have remotely covered so far are nyc, orlando, denver, brisbane, and little bits of worcester and chicago. if you know anything in your area that fits the bill, send it my way!

Fantastic guide, I'm working my way through it. Another amazing platform under the "expression" side would be blot.im, which I've used. Basically all you do is add text (markdown, etc) and image files to a Dropbox folder and it published them as a blog. $4 a month at last check.

dotmatrices I stopped using it because I was spread too thin in terms of platforms, but I absolutely loved it. Publishing is so incredibly frictionless. Literally as easy as writing in a text file and saving it.

This is a cool project, just followed to keep up! For some west coast love, these are some stuffs to check out in the LA & LB area: MakeOutMusic (venue), NonPlus Ultra (venue), Page Against the Machine (communist/socialist bookstore and zine distributor), 2220 Arts + Archive (center for culture and arts), Yogalution Movement (free yoga on the beach bluffs EVERY DAY), Jazz is Dead Collective (keeps jazz alive despite the name) I have so much more but the comments canā€™t go forever haha I love LA! Feel free to message me, if youā€™re looking for more ā˜ŗļø

greenfriedrice wait! Misread what the ask was! If itā€™s newsletters and zines, Page Against the Machine will have loads connected. I feel like the LA zine scene is still very much, you show up somewhere and get handed a piece of paper lol Iā€™ll try to look into local mags and newsletters because I know those circulate (I just donā€™t keep up as much)

greenfriedrice just went through these - was able to add makeoutmusic, page against the machine, 2220 arts, yogulation, and jazz is dead. the others i couldn't because as you mention they don't have newsletters or RSS feeds attached. with that said, if you know the organizers personally, i am more than happy to give them guidance on how to set up an RSS feed for their stuff - and depending on what technology they're using and the reach they have i could be willing to directly help them set it up. if you think it's worth reaching out, cc me ([email protected]) in whatever email you send them! the ones i was able to add should be reflected on the site later tonight or tomorrow. thanks again!

This is so cool! For Denver Iā€™d recommend adding: Little Read Books, Seventh Circle Music Collective, Whittier Cafe, Fort Greene Bar, 40 West Arts District, Town Hall Collective, Treehouse Cyclery, and Nerd Nite Denver. Dying for glob and squirm to have a presence beyond instagram šŸ¤ž

morgananker + Denver zine library!!

morgananker ty for these! going to go through the comments of this post throughout the week to add stuff just a note - i have actually already checked out seventh circle based on another rec, but iirc they didnā€˜t have a newsletter and their rss was mega out of date. iā€™m trying to be pretty strict with the feed and / or newsletter requirement for local venues and orgs specifically because i want folks to be able to quickly get all their local event notifs in one place. iā€™ve already reached out to seventh circle via email to ask if theyā€™re interested in maintaining their rss feed again, and if you happen to know folks their personally let them know that iā€™m more than willing to help with that process
