"How am I ever supposed to take care of myself," I cried to my mom, "when I can't even take care of a plant?!" I was 15 and my cactus had just died from overwatering. I avoided house plants for years, until I came across a pothos while my mental health was in the gutter. The little thing became everything to me. I propagated it, bought more plants. Whenever dark clouds come rolling into my mind, I lay my plants extra attention. "I take good care of myself, little one," I tell them while watering them, "so I can take better care of you."

House plants are more than decor. The life that they bring to a home is worth the upkeep.  If you're out of town often,  ask a neighbor/friend to take care of it. it takes a village most times and the love you put in comes back to you i promise. Even if it's something small, make sure you have a plant in your space.

If you want to practice patience and the horror of letting go, cacti are there for you. You'll soon learn that sometimes what the subject of your care needs the most out of you is nothing. Overdoing is a death sentence; overwatering, over sunning, over shadowing. The damned green nub might even seem to mock your ministrations when you're not looking. Let it be, please. Remember the name Münchhausen. The desire to act is the most insidious poison for a cactus; it will get you high off the delusion of the importance of your actions as it drowns your plant, which will fuel further your thirst for action and the inevitable death-spiral of rot and fungi. It doesn't need salvation. It certainly doesn't care for it. All it asks for is a little water, enough sun, some repotting and, of course, love. Always love; just not enough of the stuff for it to kill the cactus.

I never thought I’d get asked this but a few days ago my friend who is out of town asked me to go to her place and water her plants.
Her apartment was so silent and clean, and her plants were clearly struggling. I enjoyed filling a small glass I found in the kitchen with water and going back and forth watering her plants and refilling the glass until all were properly taken care of. I then left the keys back in the secret spot and left. I sent her an Instagram DM telling her it was done and it all worked out great! So happy for her plants.

I'm a July baby. Growing up, I spent most of my birthdays alone. Some years because my friends had left the country. Some years because I'd left the country. Some years because I had no friends. And with every year passing, the pressure to spend my birthday surrounded by friends and family and to have a good time increased. Every year I felt like a failure when I couldn't make it happen. So I stopped telling people it's my birthday.
But today is my 28th birthday.

I hadn't seen my friend since New Year's Eve. Now it was October, her wedding day, and she barely gave me the chance to gush over her gorgeous dress, her makeup, her jewelry. "You look happier," she said. "Your energy has changed. It's much calmer now. I'm happy for you." I love her for taking the time out of her special day to notice me like that.

We got the call just after 7pm. My dad had gone for a run, collapsed, and was found dazed and confused by his friends, who called an ambulance.
I drove my mom to the ER. We spent four endless hours at my dad's bed, waiting for test results that took forever to reach us. Just before midnight, the doctor told us my dad's heart was okay, but they'd keep him overnight for observation. My mom and I were sent home. We hadn't eaten yet.
The house felt wrong when we came home. Empty without my dad. I started crying. "You have to eat something," my mom said. She dug up some chicken nuggets from the depths of the freezer. Everything felt incomplete with just the two of us there, but after a couple of chicken nuggets, we thought for the first time that everything would turn out okay. My dad is too stubborn to go like that. Especially when there are chicken nuggets to be eaten with his family.
