It doesn’t exist as its own entity anymore, but I could happily wear vintage Laura Ashley for the rest of my life, and in fact I wear it so often I basically already do. If I get married, I plan on wearing a 70s Laura Ashley wedding dress. Weirdly, a substack mutual today posted a piece on a specific Laura Ashley dress that we both own (linked). A close second would probably be M&S (if this included vintage St Michael’s).

There’s loads on Vinted and EBay! I swear by them. Always well made, always lovely fabrics. I’m getting a silk one I got for £8 on Vinted tailored atm for a wedding I’m going to!

I live in these nightgowns more than I love a lot of people. I use them to write (the stiffer cotton floral variety) and to sleep (the stretchy sacks with Peter Pan collars, like putting just one decoration on a dying Christmas tree) and flirt (that’s when I bust out my knee length with the frilly straps.) The long Victorian overcoats are perfect for water coloring. They’re higher quality than their price point suggests, and it’s time we get them out of Vermont Country Store purgatory and maybe even rebrand them as a sought after Bohemian wardrobe staple. If anyone from Eileen Fisher is listening, I have a long held dream that I paint a series of patterns to adorn your bestsellers. Lena x Eileen West. It sounds niche now, but…

I feel like the “one brand for the rest of your life” part of the ask is being overlooked. Sure, for work and day-to-day stuff a lot of brands cover those bases. But what about wedding attire? What about any sort of suiting? All seasons? Something you can wear today and still want to wear in ten, twenty, thirty years? There’s a long term strategic game to consider. For luxury it’s easy to go for whatever is hyper popular now, but you’ll look silly wearing some of these brands in your 70’s. Think timeless and versatile, think about the collabs the brand does that cross into other life tasks. I think Drakes is one of the best at hitting every single season, every situation. The other only answer I can think of that might not fall under typical luxury is Ralph Lauren with the massive umbrella of sub-brands.

I used to be envious of people who had “MySpace friends” or “tumblr friends”. Now I have PI.FYI friends. Thank you capyboppy for your lovely letter and this illustration of a capybara and a mouse with fruit on our heads, it made me weirdly emotional ❤️
