i struggle with eye contact big time and force it when i’m at work so as not to seem rude, but i have to break it constantly before i explode. even if someone is pretty to look at :( i can usually only do it with my closest friends. it makes me very sad because i enjoy connecting and interacting with people sometimes i just wish our eyeballs didn’t have to telepathically kiss when we do it. i like how cats slow blink at you as a way to break eye contact bc they Know. so strangers will not be getting a single eyeball from me.

why does everyone avoid eye contact? in my opinion, eyes are the doors to the soul. i genuinely love looking people in the eye when i’m speaking to them, i think it makes the conversation more intresting and it makes me feel like they are paying attention when i'm talking. i’ve also noticed that this is a habit people with great social skills adhere, and i really admire that. approximately most people i’ve met usually try to abstain from eye contact, and unfortunately it makes them look insecure and uncertain in themselves.

Since I was a kid, I’ve never been able to consistently look at ppl in the eye during conversations.
You know when you say a word too many times that it starts losing its meaning and you don’t even know what you’re saying anymore? (re: semantic satiation)
The same thing happens to me with eye contact. If I stare at someone for too long, I start losing sense of their face because I’ve been too hyper focused on looking into their eyes. And if I get too caught up in maintaining eye contact, I risk potentially losing track of what the person was even saying to begin with; which generally just comes off as me being rude/inconsiderate of the other person in the convo.
I’ve definitely gotten better at maintaining better eye contact as I’ve gotten older, but it’s still a struggle. I generally have to do a little dance with my own eyes and alternate between looking at different parts of a person’s face (or occasionally look elsewhere/fidget with something for a couple of seconds between stares) so that I’m still “looking” at them most of the time without appearing like I’m uninterested or risk losing focus on what they’re saying.

i have a staring problem. people always tell me i have a very piercing gaze but i think it’s just cause i have big eyes framed by dark eyebrows. i love the game of eye contact and seeing how people react but i also love seeing people see me

started writing this a few hours ago when i first saw this ask, then decided against posting but i've since changed my mind. there really is no justification for it outside of entitlement. even from a selfish lens, there's no long term benefit to its usage. it harms the world and culture in more ways than one.
a.) the water and energy usage that isn't a secret at this point. "no ethical consumption under capitalism" yadda yadda and yeah corporations are extremely culpable in the state of the environment but there really is no need for chatgpt and the planet is already too delicate at the moment.
b.) the exploitation of workers in the global south. this program is not just a computer figuring it all out, there are in fact humans behind it. it reminds me of the acceptance of fast fashion and how people have the tendency to divorce the idea of the garment worker from the garment they wear when all clothing is handmade in some way, shape or form. you need hands to man a sewing machine, you need human eyes to moderate content. also, content moderation can be a thankless job with psychological repercussions.
c.) the erosion of social skills, humanity and media literacy...this one is very personal. like, you have a cushy email job but can't write an email? you need a computer and a worker in kenya to get paid a dollar an hour to figure out a daily routine for you? i've seen the program churn out blatantly incorrect information. fine tuning a prompt or chat or whatever to give you the exact (possibly incorrect) answer you need isn't really that much less work than sharpening your research skills by cracking open a dictionary or using boolean search keys in google. again, the main issue with this kind of stuff is the entitlement to convenience, with no thought towards the repercussions within and outside of us. we are losing major recipes (critical thinking and media literacy) here, people!
