I am learning to forgive people instantly, to forgive before they’ve wronged me, to forgive them for the sin that is being human. Grace is undeserved favor, and as someone who has been obsessed with being The Victim, it’s so freeing to accept that all people are deserving of forgiveness and grace.  Also, it makes me morally superior to them.

I have another indie theater that I prefer because it’s cozier, has better vibes, is much closer to me, and everybody who works there is genuinely passionate about film. It’s not really anything special visually but it’s a beautiful institution and it’s so fun to be there ❤️ But this one is an old art deco theatre designed by architect John Eberson (he designed Loew’s Paradise in the Bronx and the Paradise Theatre in Chicago)! It’s pretty run down/poorly managed and staffed but it’s a gorgeous building and definitely worth visiting. Not my photos but included for illustrative purposes!!

Staying at the Roxy in NY (formerly the Tribeca Grand) is akin to being on an elegant cruise in Manhattan. It’s my home away from home in the city. Everything is there: from live jazz in the massive atrium lobby with the glass elevator zipping up and down and the divine food and drinks (I recommend the lobster roll and a mescal cocktail) in recessed leather booths shaped like teacups, to the gorgeous red velvet theater below - which offers the best films on screen in Manhattan - curated by the brilliant Illyse Singer. After attending a killer film and fascinating Q&A, retreat to the Django, the speakeasy next door, which stays open til 4AM and is often where the hottest underground music acts play… What else could you ask for?

Again, I'm using this category as an umbrella so I can list my favorite movies that I think by watching will make everyone's life better or at least distract you from whatever bullshit is going on in your own life for a moment, and put a smile on your face. Maybe you'll even relate to what the characters in the films are going through and you'll feel a little bit less alone and it will change your life forever. These are my favorite movies that I watch over and over again: An Unmarried Woman, Swingers, Annie Hall, Broken English, Girlfriends. Last Days of Disco, and Hannah and Her Sisters. And one of my favorite theaters to watch movies in in New York City is Metrograph. A sanctuary. A safe haven. The programming is extraordinary. And they have a wonderful restaurant upstairs called The Commissary. Run don't walk.

This may seem obvious to people who didn’t grow up in the suburbs, but I’ve been enjoying having custom objects made for me. I’ve been wearing a belt I designed from an anagram I’ve been drawing since I was 12, cut by a trusted steelworker who also built the railing I designed in my house. I have custom handmade mirrors and tables and handbrushes and stools and jeans. I may not be able to build stuff but I sure can tell people what to do. It’s so nice to have personal relationships with objects and the craftspeople who make them.

I do not understand how everyone is not shazaming everything all the time. I once was trying out an assistant who asked me “what song is this?” TWICE in a row about an obscure playlist I was bumping. Needless to say, he was never seen again. I can tell what city I was in at any given time based on what Shazams are in my history. Do you not feel the burn of existential curiosity searing a hole into your soul constantly?

Remember Deleted Scenes? Remember Director’s Commentary? Remember the feeling of holding something warm in your hands and appreciating the cultural exchange you just had with it? You can’t get that from a streaming network. I bought a DVD player this year, went to the Goodwill DVD section and bought Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and a pilates dvd for $1. One day the billionaires will cut the internet off and we will all look up and realize that we don’t own any of the media we love. Buy vinyl, buy cds, and buy DVDs – especially if you want to learn more about the movies you already love.
