nothing can prepare you for how absolutely bonkers this performance is. A movie named after another movie with absolutely no relationship to the original (just the name and the character.) Nic Cage is fully off the reservation in this one, and that says alot.
Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans is a crazy movie. It takes noir and turns everything up to 11, to the point of satirizing the genre. Nic Cage gives an unreal performance that reminds me of Wild at Heartโthe same over-the-top intensity that could have been awful if handled by someone less skilled then Werner Herzog. Instead, itโs mesmerizing.
Nic cage acting like a broken John travolta. John travolta pretending to be Nic cage at his most batshit. A huge budget for John Woo to blow up all kinds of shit, pre-cgi. A script that defies logic. A sci-fi prison called Erewhon with mag boots. 1997 was a good year for movies.
easily one the most overlooked and powerful flicks of the 00s, BIRTH is mystical, haunting and all around hard to Digest, but difficult has never looked so beautiful. Kidmans best performance too. Currently part of THREE by Jonathan Glazier on Criterion.
Quite potentially (hopefully not) the last great smartphone size. As powerful as any other model on the market with the best hand feel. Iโll use this bad boy til its out of service.
