it’s not delusional or ego inflating, it’s not creepy or stalkerish, but I’m a good internet sleuth and try to search for the company name + “recruiter” or “talent” and show genuine interest + how I am relevant to them, it’s how I got my last gig

As someone who's hired this is def a good idea. When hiring you get tons of boilerplate resumes and most feel like they used a service to apply to anything and everything. If someone shows real interest and knows about the company I'll put them at the top of the stack without question.

Out of curiosity, what did you say? I always want to do this but I feel weird just out of the blue saying "hey, I applied for this job - ok bye!"

mirabe11a if it’s on LinkedIn I request to connect with a note that’s like “hey so and so, noticed that (Evil Corporation) is hiring for the role of XYZ, happy to connect and discuss the role/company culture. My experience in ABC at (Other Corporation) could be a great asset to your team” and then if they accept it just thank them and tell them you applied and hope you can chat soon

staysexyhavefun oh trust me I used to be so fucking terrified but if the person on the other end is 1. in a good mood and not an asshole and 2. appreciates the curiosity, then there’s 0 risk to trying it

Looking for a job is like a job in itself. There is the looking, there is the applying. there is the cover letter, there is the waiting. Then they make interviews extra-long and worse, in phases/tests - making you jump through hoops. If you see a job posting on linkedin for eg, click on the job poster, and email them directly. I start by saying "I saw an ad but don't fit all the boxes." Send them a quick descriptor and then attach my CV. Some do respond.

Meet people in person. your online presence is a little bonus mini existence to supplement your real life existence. i got every job ive ever had because i met the person hiring or i was recommended by an employee. spending hours on indeed and sending 1000 emails might work, but in the end its all about who you know. Go to events where youre likely to meet people you could work with. Make friends. let them get familiar with what you do. Ask if they need your services or if they know anyone who does. Theres no shortcut to get people to like you. Would you hire a stranger via email over someone your friend chris recommends? Probably not.
