it’s like super heavy and one of those things i probably couldn’t watch again in a “requiem for a dream” type of way, but i don’t regret watching harmony korine’s 1999 film “julien donkey boy”. heart wrenching portrayal of a young man with an undiagnosed schizoaffective disorder living with an extremely dysfunctional family. experimental as it is one of the films that’s part of the dogma 95 movement (one of the only good movies to come from that movement imo, even if it broke a few rules)

blue spring (2001) kinda fits this description. i’d say it’s a little too graphic to fall directly into the melancholic genre you’re describing, but it’s still a great watch nonetheless.

Do not watch this film if you are depressed, sad or melancholy because it will severely compound those feelings. But if you want to see how a genius filmmaker can create spectacular moods and atmospheres of real despair and pathos then this film is for you. It's a visceral experience and a challenging one at that...more like a cinematic occult ritual. Take particular note of Volker Spengler's fearless performance and also the "Frankie Teardrop" scene for an example of what I mean about creating a sensory poem of anguish using sound and visions.

Some happy cry, some sad cry, in no particular order
- Perfect days (Dir. Wim Wenders, 2023) - About Time (Dir. Richard Curtis, 2013) - After Yang (Dir. Kogonada, 2021) - Tokyo Story (Dir. Yasujirō Ozu, 1953) - Parallel Mothers (Dir. Pedro Almodóvar, 2021) - C’mon C’mon (Dir. Mike Mills, 2021)
Honorable mention because it’s 4 hours long and WILL destroy you: - An Elephant Sitting Still (Dir. Hu Bo, 2018)
