The Spread of Obesity in a Large Social Network over 32 Years (Christakis, 2007) from the New England Journal of Medicine. For years the study tracked the BMI and relationship between individuals focusing on the effects on general health and the type of connection. I think about the paper often because it brings up ideas around complacency with comfort, in this case, the company kept. We are all assigned agency but at times it's easier to sit back if "obesity" or even "smoking" is the norm. I linked to the saved paper in my second brain, you can find other research papers that might interest you.

for anyone who wants to learn about how scientific knowledge can be influenced through manipulation of data and then disseminated to the masses by biased media, the way scientists with differing theories that don’t align with institutional and corporate interests can be discredited and dismissed by the loudest most persuasive authoritative voices in the room, and the TRUTH about dietary fats that the sugar lobby doesn’t want you to know… “This makes scientific inquiry prone to the eternal rules of human social life: deference to the charismatic, herding towards majority opinion, punishment for deviance, and intense discomfort with admitting to error. Of course, such tendencies are precisely what the scientific method was invented to correct for, and over the long run, it does a good job of it. In the long run, however, we’re all dead, quite possibly sooner than we would be if we hadn’t been following a diet based on poor advice.”

and focusing instead on making reasonably healthy, self-compassionate, consistent choices and moving your body in ways that make you feel good. We’re assaulted with numbers, data, and metrics everywhere else in life why let it creep into your relationship with food and your body!!! It takes time and practice to do this right and find balance without descending into total uninhibited hedonism but it can be freeing to live this way. Controversial perhaps…

I recommend saying this if you want to make the office kitchen awkward and watch people laugh uncomfortably while they try to enjoy a bagel. It’s a guaranteed way to make folks feel bad for indulging in life's little pleasures.👍👍👍 Honestly, I don’t know how diet culture became a competition of who can have the most unregulated eating habits :(—it’s not a flex. It just creates shame. My best advice? Eyes on your own plate. Encourage others, set boundaries, and remember: food choices are personal, and they’re theirs alone
