one of my favorite superhero comics of all time. written by al ewing and largely drawn by joe bennett, the immortal hulk brings the character back to its horror roots, adding a cosmic horror element as well. ewing is one of the best comic writers of our lifetime. the story finds bruce banner newly resurrected, discovering that exposure to gamma radiation gives a person access to a portal to hell. banner (who had dissociative identity disorder even before becoming the hulk to cope with childhood abuse) finds himself no longer in control of the devil hulk, one of his many hulk personalities. the devil hulk has taken it upon himself to creep out at night and punisher evildoers, like the devil. this comic is an exploration of morality, recovering from childhood abuse, the role of the devil, and cohesively bringing together decades of hulk history. it got me through college. it means a lot to me.

while not a direct sequel to the immortal hulk, the immortal thor is described by author al ewing as "the new testament to the immortal hulk's old testament". thor, king of asgard (this has been the status quo for a few years now) is essentially jesus, sent by his mother gaea to save humanity from her wrath for their greatest sin: destroying the environment. in this story thor fights elder gods, story magic threatening to change the narrative of thor's myth, evil megacorporation roxxon/roxxon's ceo (the minotaur named dario agger), and a corporate mcu-ified version of thor known as the roxxon thor aka AI spokesguru chad hammer. this book tackles a lot of themes regarding capitalist evil and the necessity to fight the biggest polluters directly, themes touched on in the immortal hulk but that ewing didn't have time to flesh out more. in a lot of ways it reads to me as a modern day version of grant morrison's animal man.

over the past few years, the mutants of marvel have had their own nation-state, krakoa. it's been the best period for x-men since the 90s. unfortunately, it's ending now, and on a bit of a whimper too, but at its peak it tackled morally difficult questions about nation-building and what a hero looks like in this new world for the x-men. i think it would be a wonderful project for anyone to look up the reading order of all the books and just read them, and i could give a half dozen recs from this era, but my favorite of all the books is hellions. krakoa is a nation without a prison. it is also a nation that has, through immense political favors, granted criminal forgiveness and immunity for all mutants around the globe. even the mutants who have committed heinous crimes against humanity are allowed to live on krakoa as long as they abide by its laws, a chance at rehabilitation not offered by the human world. but can the most despicable mutants be redeemed by being given this once-in-a-lifetime chance? enter the hellions, a rehabilitation program for mutants whose powers make them inherently violent and destructive. can being sent on black-ops missions where they are allowed to let loose their powers for good make them productive members of society? or were they always doomed? this comic about a group of d-list x-men villains outsold the avengers. nanny outsold the avengers! it's not just a great story about redemption, but also it's really fun.
