personally, i thought it was just alright. the pacing was not my favourite in the world but the cinematography and set design was gorg. the actors did a phenomenal job with their respective roles as well. however, the plot itself was lackluster and the film overall was not probing any new or enticing questions or analyses in the grand scheme of feminist theory that hasn't already been done, and done in a more effective and intruiging way (to ME). not to say that a film HAS to always be revolutionary, but my theory is that a lot of people have been "overrating" Poor Things and acting like it IS revolutionary partially because the public has been jaded by the majority of big films being one of four things: remakes, sequels, live adaptations of a pre-existing animation, or about the multiverse. not that these types of film are inherently bad, but when theaters are being flooded with these movies, it leaves film execs no desire to create a unique script and film as they are likely worried that original films with little to no pre-existing fanbase would not be as profitable comparatively. however, i do think that the high praise and positive reception of Poor Things has done a lot of good by showing execs that original movies CAN be successful and the public DOES WANT THEM. i also think its great that an arthouse film is serving as a symbol to push for more original films in the future. plus, just because i don't consider it revolutionary doesn't mean someone else isn't allowed to! these are simply my own personal views so pls don't feel discouraged if u really enjoyed the movie!

Didn't think I was going to find a movie I liked more than Godzilla Minus One (which was my favorite of last year before this) but Poor Things is an absolute vision and perfectly executed on all fronts - if it's still playing in a theater near you don't missĀ it.

*Some thematic spoilers maybe? Beware* Still working out all my thoughts about this movie, it's kinda stream of consciousness atm but wow... All the magic and horror that comes out of media consumption amongst queer teenage suburban isolation... the simultaneous connection and disconnection from others through it. It also explores neurodivergence, queerness, asexuality, gender identity expression and repression, depression and sometimes suicide (ideation and attempts) amongst the backdrop of media consumption. It's all connected. Media as a portal to other worlds, a portal to other selves, a portal to a place where other people understand and you are empowered and you belong. Blurring the lines between the physical self and a digital projection of a desired self, and the euphoria and horrors that come along with that. All things I heavily relate to. This is very much a movie for Millennials, Gen Z and Gen A in the best ways possible. I think specifically for teens at the moment but also people who were teens not long ago. I wish this movie was there for me 10 years ago. I won't lie, there are a lot of corny moments as well and some over-use of visuals, but the messages override it all for sure. It's also important to note that the director Jane Schoenbrun is trans and goes by they/them pronouns. Being non-binary myself (among pretty much everything else I mentioned in the 2nd paragraph), this movie made me feel seen and understood. The music was amazing too!!! Alex G never misses!!! I loved the covers of Anthems and Tonight, Tonight, the fact that they're recent covers really brings us back to the present with a reflection of the past. Last thing I will say is I wrote a bit about Digital Doubles and DoppelgƤngers in my Communications program and now really want to explore that again because of this movie.

when i watched queer for the first time last year, i think i was expecting (and hoping for) a wrwwr/cmbyn-esque film. when it was so not that i think i was disappointed because i had been so excited for that kind of a storyline and style. there was no way it was anywhere close to my top guadagnino films. earlier this month i was watching some of his interviews etc. about the film and decided to watch it again last week and i legitimately think it may be my favourite film of his. knowing the meanings of the symbolism and more surreal elements of the film, and what to expect of the storyline, i connected with the characters soooo much more. this is a mega rec, anyone who rates this film less than a 4 and has only seen it once should rewatch or ur in danger bcs i cannot stand to see that this film averages at a 3.4 on letterboxd, what’s going on??? im embracing pretentiousness bcs no like u actually just don’t get it x this was a testament to rewatching films before projectile vomiting ugly lame opinions of them šŸ™ this film is my child!

firstly, thank you so, so much for those who showed interest by interacting with my initial ask! it meant a TON <3 for those that didn’t get to see the context, my dearest friend and i have decided to dip our toes in creating a team of artists for a photography zine, as we’ve always wanted to create a community of like-minded artists where we encourage and inspire each other to create new pieces and challenge each other by exploring different themes and methodologies we may not have looked into otherwise. plus, we just love zines and always wanted to make one ourselves :D we will be publishing our zine online and will be offering opportunities in the future to acquire physical zines for anyone interested in a copy~ as a sneak peek, our first issue’s theme will be ā€œanalog distortion v.s. digital distortionā€ :O we finally got the discord up and running, so if you’re interested in more details on how the zine will operate and for more details on our theme… https://discord.gg/eKVmeCthsP joining the discord doesn’t mean u have to commit right away! pls feel free to change ur mind if u feel that the zine isn’t right for u after all (and to clarify, revenue, if any, made from the zine goes directly to our artists and back into the zine first and foremost! but we are a passion project and community space more than anything) cheers, every1 (:
