love this austrian woman who started sharing herbal remedies in the 1980s mainstream by making them look as chaste as possible lol (i still think she was a witch). i used to work at an apothecary, and we referenced this book often to help customers. i’ve also found immense benefit from some of her suggestions for menstrual cramps, tummy troubles, headaches, allergies/respiratory issues, etc, plus i love the ritualistic element of preparing and taking these herbs. some of her recommendations are a bit ?? but otherwise i trust her, just use your discernment. if you are interested in incorporating herbs into your life, i would start with stinging nettle, calendula, yarrow, and swedish bitters (be careful w this one bc it is literally 40% alc and u should only take like a tsp at a time). was just reminded of this bc im trying to grow my hair out and needed to reference some of her suggestions for a tincture im making i linked the book and here’s a picture of a recent edition <3

I started an herbalism apprenticeship this year with an Indigenous elder and now am surrounded by a bunch of inspiring herb people. Every one that you talk to about their “Top 5” herbs can’t resist including nettle. It’s so unassuming. It’s not crazy aromatic, or even a particularly beautiful plant at first glance. But, Nettle is an all around, super-nourishing plant for humans. It supports the respiratory system, hormone regulation, and reduces inflammation (which many of us city humans are wrought by). You can also sip it all the time without worrying you’re overdoing it. It’s very harmonious with our systems. It is easy to grow in a pot on your fire escape, too!

I found this really beautiful minimalist brand called OFNATURE, from Wales where I’m from. I was so happy they were local, organic and in glass bottles. I’ve also found a herbalist business in Wales that make herbal tinctures for all sorts of amazing things, but you have to ask for access to their website. Nature is medicine. I’ve been looking for ways to balance my hormones, support myself during PMS etc. if you don’t know her and you’d like some organic tinctures, there’s a person in the USA under Moss Medicine. I would buy from her but the shipping to the UK is £34. Forced me to wonder about local products! I just want minimal plastic, more herbs and natural products that are cruelty free! So yeah, I’m proud of the badass vegan baddie I am. And yes I get b12, protein, iodine and all the stuff. Key is to eat a number of crazy foods, lean into an Asian style diet with spices, seaweed and fermented foods. Food is a whole science!!

my sister just had a baby and i am considering the type of aunt?/guncle ? (the designation becomes tricky w gender lol) i may be. but ultimately the archetype of “cool aunt”—mysterious, distant-yet-warm, uninvolved in family dramas, arrives at family gatherings wearing strange, somehow stylish clothes, bearing copious gifts and floating on an air of urban life—resonates most soundly with me this has also led me to reflect on how my mom’s sister played such a key role in my  youth by revealing to me a foundational truth that this is not all that there is! ‘twas a very hopeful message to me, a miserable child/teen unsuited to christian suburban life, forced to procure my wardrobe primarily from the women’s section at the department store because that is what my mother deemed reasonable (and kohl’s cash)  some of the notable moments my aunt bestowed upon my adolescence include: • taking me to see moonrise kingdom at the indie art deco theater in a nearby mountain town  • driving me to philly for shows at tla even though she had no idea who the artists were and would stand in the back; also paying for all my meals and whims on our south street jaunts • curating a collection of signed books from author visits at her local library, which she’d always drop off nonchalantly as gifts (charles santore picture books, lemony snicket !)  • signing me up for 5ks and carting me along to her races • explaining to me what a “lesbian” is and taking me to meet said lesbians in a dimly lit new york restaurant where i tried alligator sausage and felt so urbane  • general trips to ny for broadway shows and museums   • introducing me to rummikub • letting me roam free at community music festivals from late afternoon til dusk, where i’d encounter children from different counties, get in harmless trouble and infuse my life with the intrigue of those unknown to me but in those brief moments
