This is normal in New York because there’s obviously a stronger pedestrian presence than there is in LA, but LA has such good street food/takeout windows that I’m surprised I don’t see people do it more. All this to say, if you saw me trailing croissant flakes down Sunset today don’t worry about it

I’ve noticed since moving to LA that when people are driving in cars they have this sense of urgency to park as close as possible to wherever they’re entering or exiting from. But in New York a very normal occurrence would be struggling to carry two full and tearing grocery bags in my arms while being pummeled with freezing cold sleet for fifteen minutes before walking up five flights of stairs to my apartment. That sucks but also builds a resilience and a welcoming of discomfort that I feel runs deep. Los Angeles weather is primarily sunny and pleasant so simply putting forth a bit more effort to walk more is really not painful at all. I will add that I am horrible at parallel parking and parking in high-intensity environments (like on the street when there’s traffic behind me) so admittedly this practice has also been influenced by my driving around until I find a spot on the end that doesn’t require any quick geometric calculations of wheel turning and reversing - but I do genuinely find the little bit of extra walking helpful for my mental and physical well being.

Which the internet defines as good if amenities are within 0.4km or 5min. When I look at this in my own life, I compare my Manhattan apartment (across the street from a grocery store and within a block of many restaurants, drug stores, bars, the post office, etc.) to where I’m spending the summer in California (within a 20 minute walk of a grocery store and a couple of other businesses, but as a rule if I leave the house I’m jumping in the car).

It’s Friday night and I’m off work late with no plans but I felt like being out in the world, even if for a moment. Turns out, a low stakes glass of orange wine tastes great when you’re waiting for a $10 burrito platter from down the street.

I’ve spent so much time scrolling on this app that I’m able to discern some of your writing voices. There are a couple of you who have such a developed voice that I can guess you wrote a post before seeing the attached username. You’re all so observant, introspective, delusional, earnest, anxious, well-rounded, hilarious and loving. Kind of breaks my heart that I’ll likely never meet some of my favorites because we all live everywhere, but I guess that’s why we thank God for the Internet!
