I’m going through Mojo Nixonā€˜s discography right now and it’s fantastic - I had never heard of him before! It’s poignant and more powerful because they’re gone and their indelible mark has been permanently established in the annals of history. It’s also a powerful reminder we only get one kick at the can of life!

"Dying is another way. Or, like, killing your emotions, with drugs, alcohol or whatever. Those would be types of failure." Some sage life advice courtesy of Elliott Smith. This compilation of random video interviews and tour footage is a total discovery. There is one interval where I can see evidence of substances/the issues that dogged him later in life. But otherwise it's just the wryly funny, observant, articulate guy we all knew. "Dminor. The saddest of all keys." (laughs; BTW, Elliott never wrote a song in this key as best I can tell)

Everyone knows Bowie, but did you really? I didn’t know enough, but over the last couple of months I decided to start listening to the man who inspired many if not all of the modern musical geniuses. The music is beautiful: Hunky Dory Album: incredible, makes me feel seen for my weirdness, and empowered to stand up to the man, while also loving myself more. Lets Dance Album: Fun music to dance to, and the song Criminal World makes me think of my trans brothers & sisters who fight for their rights every day. Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) Album: first album I dove into after discovering the incredible song ā€œAshes to Ashesā€ which was also recently covered by Magdalena Bay (whom I love) on Like a Version. This entire album is not only a major political statement if you really listen, but also reminds me that I am young and not defined by the mistakes I’ve made in the past, I just need to live in the moment and enjoy everything I can. The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust Album: I mean come on… this one is already know for being incredible, but just listen to it again in full. ā€œThere’s a Starman waiting in the sky. He’d like to come and meet us, but he thinks he’d blow our mindsā€ - David Bowie ā€œStarmanā€ from ā€œThe Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardustā€ ā€œThey got a message from the action man: ā€˜I’m happy, hope you’re happy too. I’ve loved all I’ve needed, love. Sordid details following… ā€˜I’ve never done good things, I’ve never done bad things, I never did anything out of the blue, Whoa’.ā€ - David Bowie ā€œAshes to Ashesā€ from ā€œScary Monsters (and Super Creeps)ā€

I am finishing up his (relatively) new biography -- it's tragic as expected but his entire body of work (esp "Pink Moon" which is the one everyone knows, but who cares) is extraordinary. It'll lead you down the road of discovering Davy Graham, John Renbourne, Bert Jansch, Karen Dalton, Judee Sill, Anne Briggs, etc.

Has *almost* never failed me and when it has the other person either is super boring or literally has NO interest in making any sort of effort so really it’s either a clutch game changer or a powerful sorting tool. win win!
