Out of New Zealand — started listening to them this year and they immediately climbed to my top 5 on Spotify for the year. Saw them live and they were great. Also saw Arctic Monkeys this past fall and wow they are (still) phenomenal live.

speaking of solo concerts, i went to The Beths last night for the second time this year and wow, they are truly one of my favorite bands ever. Australian indie rock band with an incredible show both times. tight tight TIGHT band. danced my shit off, incredible guitar lines, the whole band sings backup vocals while they play, it’s unreal. feels like driving 95 down a highway or running as fast as you can until you fall straight into a body of water. feels like the most charming and poignant ways to sing about a breakup. feels like I LOVE LIVE MUSIC!!! ran into a friend at the show who told me they found The Beths through a playlist i made and got hooked. made my night. maybe you will be next

Many people know them from their Award winning “AM” and their popular TikTok song “505” but their whole library is full of incredible music. “Tranquility Base Hotel And Casino“ and “The Car” both came out after AM and are VERY overlooked, even in he Arctic Monkeys community. Their early albums (specifically “Humbug” and Whatever People Say “I Am Thats What Im Not”) have such a lively “fuck yeah” feel to them that I can’t get enough of. “Suck It And See“ is the only one I’m not a huge fan of, but many Arctic Monkeys fans love it.

My favorite of the New Zealand jangle pop bands, which I admittedly just found out are grouped together as the "Dunedin sound". Daddy's Highway is start-to-finish good and an album I revisit frequently. While we're at it, there's an indie band (from Australia if you'll allow it) called The Stroppies that rule in my opinion that I wish more people knew about. Their S/T is another no-skips record for me.

Even if you have other creative pursuits that require your brain to work, it’s fun to have one that requires very little thought or attention. I started crocheting a couple years ago and it’s perfect while sitting in front of the TV or listening to a podcast or just zoning out. Makes me feel productive even as my brain melts out my ears, and makes me feel creative even when I’m not doing any cooler, more challenging projects that require more of my energy.
