Funny Weather: Art in an Emergency - essays on art and politics, interviews with other writers, love letters to her favourite artists. it’s brilliant, as is everything Laing writes.

anything & everything she’s touched. evocative, literary, personal, critical, artistic. reading their words feels like falling into a long, lazy river or discovering the truth of the secret garden or connecting immediately, instantly with a stranger or finding peace in solitude

A tense, slow burning, gripping read. β€œIt's been raining for a long time now, for so long that the lands have reshaped themselves and the cities have retreated to higher storeys. Old places have been lost. Arcane rituals and religions have crept back into practice. Sisters Isla, Irene and Agnes have not spoken in some time when their estranged father dies. A famous architect revered for making the new world navigable, he had long cut himself off from public life. They find themselves uncertain of how to grieve his passing when everything around them seems to be ending anyway.” King Lear meets the climate crisis. Just as stunningly written as Our Wives Under the Sea. I cried when I finished it this morning, mostly at it being over.

I am by no means traditionally religious, but I fully understand how being in the presence of beautiful stained glass can feel like being with god. ALWAYS stop off at a church on the way if you think it might have good stained glass. The bluebells in the bottom right corner of this made me loose my breath for a moment.
