i am guilty of being a serial documenter (aka too sentimental for my own good) and am honestly too self-conscious to dump everything with abandon on my instagram. here, i love scrolling through all my old photos and getting reminded of what i did each week, and there’s og social functions for the real, no-pressure homies. you can send postcards!! and make monthly / yearly recaps!! the most delightful social app to celebrate the passing of time.

I love this app it’s like a mix between an Instagram weekly photo dump and BeReal. The best thing about it is that it’s close friends only (like BeReal) but I can’t convince my friends to get on it so I’ll try and convince you guys. Hopefully it will help me do more fun stuff and actually take pics of that stuff. Even if none of my friends join I’m still gonna be on there documenting my life for me.

flickr does timeline-style but is best for for sorting into folders, sharing your photography more publicly, large photo dumps. you can annotate photos. it’s also fun to look through others’ photos. i like to put my film + digital + nicer pics on flickr retro to me feels a little more social (however nobody i know really uses it…) and i like the timeline focus of it too. it’s soooort of like if flickr instagram and snapchat combined but definitely pre-ads and algorithms and junk content. it’s just you, your pics, and anyone you friend. you can do captions or just upload pics. i’m excited to look back at my timeline at the end of the year ! daylio is literally a digital diary / journal. you pick a mood and then can add any tags/activities/etc and a caption and photos if you’d like. you can also mark certain days as special events and it will send you a reminder at the yearly anniversary. i use it for tracking my mood/habits on a more daily basis since i don’t always have the ability or energy to journal for a long time every day. also the pro version always goes on sale at new years and they have cute icon/color schemes :-)

used the five metal shop one last year but it seemed a little too precious and i never ended up ripping any of the pages. got this one for 4$ in chinatown and it's a fun morning ritual. i use the torn pages for random notes each day, and thinking i'll give my friends the ones of their bday. maybe i'll finally learn the lunar calendar this year!

i met some of my now dearest friends during 2020 in a leftist asian american podcast discord server while we listened to our own diy radio and had book club and thought too hard about things. it is one of the best things that’s happened in my life. also just a very great origin story to recount irl.
