I’m taking a class on this mf. I know he’s probably talked about way too much but he is such a fascinating combo of being deeply introspective and then wildly funny. The way he writes about sleep and memory and longing is real as fuck. I’ll probably be sick of him by the end of this semester because it’s thousands of pages of reading but for now I am in love.

I attempted a read of the first volume last year but could only make it 2/3 of the way through. He lost me in the Swann in Love section, which felt like it devolved into trivial leisure class intrigue and drivel. The first part about memory and time was incredible but I wasn’t sure if it was worth persevering past the second part. I love the quote from someone I can’t remember about those who read Proust are either in bed with a broken leg or are quite ill. Hope the class goes well!

dudee i LOVE proust but i can only stomach a little bit at a time—made my last real effort two years ago and made it about halfway before losing focus and burning out… it felt a little bit like hiking halfway up Everest only to turn back, i’ll need to return to it at some point

Deep into the second volume and loving it. The plot is not as difficult to follow as I thought it'd be but even if it was, the experience of reading Proust's words and descriptions is enriching. Let me pull up to the class.

went to a cinema club - this is what it's all about. community is real! even in the city! it's not all over. i watched natural enemies and boxing helena with my friend and ally charlie. the first was awesome, the second was less so - but arguably more fun. sherilyn fenn is not a star, she is something else entirely.

Physical letters aren't just for corny love notes and eviction notices! They can be a really good way of communicating things that are too long for texting but too personal to say aloud. I feel like the convenience of texting can be deceptively dishonest, it’s often more genuine to let something bleed out on a page. It also just feels cool as fuck to write one, I like to imagine I’m some aristocrat main character in a period piece. Maybe light a candle if you want to be extra pretentious.

I was terribly allergic to Cronenberg until I saw Dead Ringers and now I’m giving his movies a chance. While he’s famous for body horror I think his best stuff is actually his movies that aren’t in that genre. This is probably my favorite mafia movie and features the absolute most badass fight scene.

Collage of documentary outtakes by Kirsten Johnson. Incredibly subtle and tender, still haunts me a year after watching.
