there are 600k+ in NYC, and they keep the city livable. In Rio, they define it. Strangler figs uproot sidewalks. Jackfruits smash open on sidewalks and leave behind a fermented smell. Cashew tree fruits keep hundreds of species of birds fed.

I love all trees, especially the city trees that tolerate being surrounded by cement and dog waste.
The trees that are safe to lay under, far from men, feel especially soothing.
Unsure why trees are still being cut down for lumber when sturdier and more sustainable options exist. Would be cool to let them live and thrive.

When I started walking up and down Kent Avenue in Williamsburg [REDACTED] years ago, I became obsessed with the trees along the fence line. The fences were rusted to shit, and the branches of the trees just grew through the chain link. Like, the wood engulfed the fences. Grows right through it and around it and subsumes it. It's something I've admired of the trees, and kept it to myself until this moment. Because I noticed, the other day, that the last stretch of where this is happening.... the fence is being replaced and the trees are being cut down so it will probably be another 50 or 100 years until you can see the trees grow through the fences. Go look.

Idk, the older I get, the more likely I am to put a bad book down. In my case, even if I'm reading 20 books a year, that's still only a few hundred books left in my lifetime. If a book is bad, cut your loses right away. There's too much great literature, and too little time.

as always, moderation is key — but you can learn a lot from a bad book. Pacing, structure, character, dialogue... Just make sure you have a chaser, even if it’s something you’ve read a million times.

seriously, read Olga Tokarczuk's speech on the "tender narrator." Beautiful and brilliant https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/literature/2018/tokarczuk/lecture/

The sound of Rio, especially during carnaval. Sound system culture, off kilter beats, the boom cha cha boom cha that sticks in your head all day.
