Idk, the older I get, the more likely I am to put a bad book down. In my case, even if I'm reading 20 books a year, that's still only a few hundred books left in my lifetime. If a book is bad, cut your loses right away. There's too much great literature, and too little time.
as always, moderation is key — but you can learn a lot from a bad book. Pacing, structure, character, dialogue... Just make sure you have a chaser, even if it’s something you’ve read a million times.

i usually find myself in reading ruts when i’m taking classes and being assigned books or when i’m trying to keep up with new releases and the “smart” books that are usually dense and long. i can usually get myself out of this rut by picking out a book that looks fun to me, like a book set on a beach or something I loved in middle school. I’m reading From The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler right now and it’s just FUN!!! I also am very much not someone who feels like they have to finish a book. Life is too short. I think that helps!

like wattpad levels of bad. makes your braincells evaporate bad. the plot makes zero sense bad. hating every single character bad. ranting to yourself abt it in the notes app bad. bonus points if it's NOT a romance but some other genre, those are admittedly harder to come across but so worth it. makes you believe you will eventually get published if someone let that text out of the basement.

seriously, read Olga Tokarczuk's speech on the "tender narrator." Beautiful and brilliant https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/literature/2018/tokarczuk/lecture/

The sound of Rio, especially during carnaval. Sound system culture, off kilter beats, the boom cha cha boom cha that sticks in your head all day.

Sexy, wistful, complicated in the way only a real-to-life portrayal of romance can be. I love how French films don't care so much for the moral arcs often portrayed in Holywood
