Idk, the older I get, the more likely I am to put a bad book down. In my case, even if I'm reading 20 books a year, that's still only a few hundred books left in my lifetime. If a book is bad, cut your loses right away. There's too much great literature, and too little time.

as always, moderation is key — but you can learn a lot from a bad book. Pacing, structure, character, dialogue... Just make sure you have a chaser, even if it’s something you’ve read a million times.

In my twenties, I became overwhelmed with a terrible fear: ‘Oh, shit! I'm going to die one day! I simply do not have enough time to engage with any piece of media more than once!’
As it turns out, you have plenty of time; if anything, life is too short for the surface-level appreciation of a first read. Go back and revisit.

i usually find myself in reading ruts when i’m taking classes and being assigned books or when i’m trying to keep up with new releases and the “smart” books that are usually dense and long. i can usually get myself out of this rut by picking out a book that looks fun to me, like a book set on a beach or something I loved in middle school. I’m reading From The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler right now and it’s just FUN!!! I also am very much not someone who feels like they have to finish a book. Life is too short. I think that helps!

seriously, read Olga Tokarczuk's speech on the "tender narrator." Beautiful and brilliant https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/literature/2018/tokarczuk/lecture/

The sound of Rio, especially during carnaval. Sound system culture, off kilter beats, the boom cha cha boom cha that sticks in your head all day.

Sexy, wistful, complicated in the way only a real-to-life portrayal of romance can be. I love how French films don't care so much for the moral arcs often portrayed in Holywood
