Really fun for a little day trip if you live in california cause it’s just about half way between LA and SF. It’s an estate built by the Hearst family and hosted all sorts of famous people in the 20s and 30s before getting donated to the state. William Randolph Hearst used his obscene wealth to build an insane mansion from the scraps of everything from ancient Egypt to medieval Europe. It has two pools, a tennis court, a billiards room, and a movie theater. They’re used to be a zoo on the grounds when the Hearsts lived there (they had fucking polar bears in California) and now there’s about 20 zebra. you should go cause road trips are fun and the coast is beautiful and there’s a lot of cool shit to do on the way to and around San Simeon

Lol I love how all of the recs so far are south. This is my favorite spot for a close-enough, northern getaway from the Bay. I’ve stayed in Airbnbs in Guerneville a couple times (DM and I can dig up the one with the hot tub way up in the redwoods) and it’s a great location since it’s closer to the coast and more redwoods/ocean than the hotness of more inland Sonoma/Napa. Go hiking in Jenner by Goat Rock and Armstong Redwoods. Ideally hit Korbel beforehand to pick up a perfect sandwich to eat on your hike. Get the best cinnamon bun of your life at Gold Star (halfway between Guerneville and the coast). Russian River Brewing is a great chill dinner spot. Probs take 101 up for a quicker drive (and a classic stop at In N Out or the veggie version essentially, Annie’s), then you can take the slow drive down 1 on the way back through Bodega Bay and Point Reyes.

Whole-ass forest in the middle of the city that somehow contains an art museum and a bison paddock and other flummoxing things. Linked is a blog of journal experts from my trip with all we saw and ate.

Sometimes you can just exist. you don’t (hopefully) need 50 hustles. You don’t need to be a writer and musician and artist and podcaster and influencer and girlboss or whatever. you don’t even need to signal how cool or smart or attractive you are. I know it’s hard cause I think our society incentives (forces?) people to be “on” all the time, but it’s probably better for your own sake to just exist for yourself and your love ones and to adjust your expectations of what a successful or meaningful life is. Sorry for being pedantic, just know a lot of friends and family my age or younger that seem to be struggling right now in all sorts of ways. Just know, regardless of what anyone says or even what you say or do, that you guys have inherent dignity and you are worth something
