maybe it’s just my toxic trait but it is genuinely really satisfying learning about people I disagree with. most recently felt this while visiting la conciergerie and seeing the section on Robespierre last week. obviously, the French ppl were right to overthrow the monarch, and I also feel like American text books never get into the fact that this revolution was really two revolutions within a few years, because the first revolutionary government was crazy. Robespierre was in charge of propagand, and his work (guillotining people) was an act of national security and public health.
I think he genuinely viewed terror as necessary for good, which is just so fascimating. I disagree a lot, but it’s so much fun to daydream about what an Interview may have been like.
