I‘m literally working on a presentation about the walkman effect right at this moment so I have to share this excerpt: In particular, the division of space into an acoustic and an optical level offers many possibilities, both in art and socially. "Living with a soundtrack" means being able to control your own emotions and situations more consciously and to shape your own life like a director, so to speak. The individual is thus given back a degree of autonomy by being able to escape the externally determined soundscapes.

NOT WEARING HEADPHONES IN PUBLIC

I‘ve always been an adamant listener of music while on walks, at a cafe, etc. but recently I’ve feeling more anxious, more disconnected than usual. Not listening to music has helped me feel significantly more grounded, more aware of my surroundings, connected to the world around me. Also, strangers will definitely be more inclined to speak to you if they know you can hear them. If you’re into that sort of thing.
