It was a queer, sultry summer, the summer they electrocuted the Rosenbergs, and I didn’t know what I was doing in New York.

try and wish as i might to dislodge the opening sentence from the corner of permanency of my brain, it won't shift. because it's just that good. so delicious and juicy and evocative and rhythmic that every time i peel open the well-loved, well-worn, well-aged copy of the book, i am unable to stop reading at just that first line. 'It was a queer, sultry summer, the summer they electrocuted the Rosenbergs, and I didn't know what I was doing in New York.' at once it's hot and sticky and bad things are in the air and it's all whimsical and meandering and at lost. i am there on the sidewalk, melting into the cement, unsure of it all.

This is a debut novel by a hugely talented Irish writer about a teenage girl in 1960s New York who ends up working in Warhol’s Factory, transcribing taped conversations destined to be collated into an experimental novel. It’s weird and wild and extremely funny and sad, perfect for anyone used to wandering around a glamorous city feeling like a lumpen freak.

Pre 9/11 New York City really was wild AF. The idea of a drug induced hibernation seemed more enticing as ever the further I got in this book. To have enough money to do that feels like the true dream. I would say this is vaguely racist in some parts but “It’s Ottessa bitch.! so we will allow it.Also we have all known a Trevor in our relationships so this is a siren call to stay away at all costs.

So sweet to send them to thank them for your shared experience, and I’d much rather look at one of these than ten pics from that day

go to events even if u think they’ll be iffy - better to have some memories of living life than none, go to library, go sit on the nearest grass also u can’t expect good arts and culture if u don’t support the bad/amateur stuff as well 🦀

Eg in shower, on walks, during commute, making dinner, to go to sleep, getting dressed. be able to do all these comfortably in silence. then u can try phase them back in in a way where they actually contribute something and ur not just listening for the sake of it
