I have another indie theater that I prefer because it’s cozier, has better vibes, is much closer to me, and everybody who works there is genuinely passionate about film. It’s not really anything special visually but it’s a beautiful institution and it’s so fun to be there ❤️ But this one is an old art deco theatre designed by architect John Eberson (he designed Loew’s Paradise in the Bronx and the Paradise Theatre in Chicago)! It’s pretty run down/poorly managed and staffed but it’s a gorgeous building and definitely worth visiting. Not my photos but included for illustrative purposes!!

Staying at the Roxy in NY (formerly the Tribeca Grand) is akin to being on an elegant cruise in Manhattan. It’s my home away from home in the city. Everything is there: from live jazz in the massive atrium lobby with the glass elevator zipping up and down and the divine food and drinks (I recommend the lobster roll and a mescal cocktail) in recessed leather booths shaped like teacups, to the gorgeous red velvet theater below - which offers the best films on screen in Manhattan - curated by the brilliant Illyse Singer. After attending a killer film and fascinating Q&A, retreat to the Django, the speakeasy next door, which stays open til 4AM and is often where the hottest underground music acts play… What else could you ask for?

Again, I'm using this category as an umbrella so I can list my favorite movies that I think by watching will make everyone's life better or at least distract you from whatever bullshit is going on in your own life for a moment, and put a smile on your face. Maybe you'll even relate to what the characters in the films are going through and you'll feel a little bit less alone and it will change your life forever. These are my favorite movies that I watch over and over again: An Unmarried Woman, Swingers, Annie Hall, Broken English, Girlfriends. Last Days of Disco, and Hannah and Her Sisters. And one of my favorite theaters to watch movies in in New York City is Metrograph. A sanctuary. A safe haven. The programming is extraordinary. And they have a wonderful restaurant upstairs called The Commissary. Run don't walk.

german record label dedicated to re-releasing arabic funk and jazz records from the 70s&80s. i don’t speak a word of arabic but the music is so good. so many infectious melodies. perfect blend of funk, jazz, disco, a little psych rock. perfect cooking music. discovered from the ramy soundtrack (v. good show i also recommend this) which features many songs from them. as a starting point i suggest the album “modern music” by Al Massrieen. https://youtu.be/am_utNHjclk?si=R4PAGIwTBo_Tn-w_

one of my favorite ways to discover new artists. put in the name of an artist you like and it generates a map of other artists you might like; the closer artists are together the more likely you’ll like them all. discovered so many gems using this… (the gnod website has other cool tools like this one but this is the one i use the most)

it has a slightly nebulous definition and might not be all that revolutionary of a concept but it consistently brings joy to my life. i use it as a collection of quotes & lines from film, books, music, and any other form of art and writing that resonated with me. sometimes i’ll just write down the quote, other times i’ll expand on why it’s meaningful to me. but now i have a collection of other people’s ideas that make me feel seen and speak to me to look at whenever i need it. using a physical journal also makes it more tangible, like i’m actually holding the ideas in my hands.
