this was so excellent, i had never heard of it before i saw it was up at the filmoteca on a random night when i had no plans, didn't even know paul newman had directed films.. heartbreaking and funny and so real and so 70s. great cinematography, great script with lots to chew on and great acting.. joanne woodward really knocks it out of the park and lays the foundation for gena rowlands to drive it home two years later in woman under the influence

The whole movie is a vibe, as the kids (still?) say, but every time I watch it (lost count but it's in the double digits by now) I'm especially floored by Shelley Duvall's perfect performance as style icon Millie Lammoreaux, who transforms from an obliviously overconfident working gal to the bewildered focus of roommate Sissy Spacek's obsessive attention as the two begin to swap identities to ... someone else in the film's final enigmatic five minutes. Surely the best film by Robert Altman, who said the story came to him in a dream.

⭐Ranking things out of three (no half stars, 0 permissible) is a valuable exercise. The limitations force one to reckon with the boundaries of language and the necessity of a respect for nuance. One out of three could be pretty bad..on the other hand, it's still pretty good.
