this guy came up with *Ghost World* and *Art School Confidential* and his newest book *Monica* has a similar affect BUT it's much wilder, it collages in chapters that almost have nothing to do with the "main" storyline, which covers the life of Monica, une ~bastarde trying to make it through the 70s to ... beyond now? Insert cults, candle companies... seems Pynchonian thinking back... I liked this book a whole lot. Quite sad overall, very concerned with Nostalgia/wanting things that aren't/weren't, with a weirdo weirdo surprising explosive ending

Again, I'm using this category as an umbrella so I can list my favorite movies that I think by watching will make everyone's life better or at least distract you from whatever bullshit is going on in your own life for a moment, and put a smile on your face. Maybe you'll even relate to what the characters in the films are going through and you'll feel a little bit less alone and it will change your life forever. These are my favorite movies that I watch over and over again: An Unmarried Woman, Swingers, Annie Hall, Broken English, Girlfriends. Last Days of Disco, and Hannah and Her Sisters. And one of my favorite theaters to watch movies in in New York City is Metrograph. A sanctuary. A safe haven. The programming is extraordinary. And they have a wonderful restaurant upstairs called The Commissary. Run don't walk.

I like having a historical record of the shows I've been to, and I'm sad that many places don't do physical tickets anymore. How do we fix this? Does anyone know a guy?

my impulsive top 4 of all time atm Matilda formed my aesthetic / ethic sensibility at a very young age ... both light-hearted and dark... resourceful kids and either demonic or angelic adults... I need to catch more Danny Devito as director stuff, I think he's one of the most significant cultural figures of our times Earwig is a fairly recent fave. Somewhat similar philosophically to Matilda^^ but European and much much darker. Made by Lucile Hadzhihalilovic (work and life partner w Gaspar Noe). She seems to be making movies about adults biopoliticsmaxxing children. Giving Kafka, I think, but not even a little funny. Dreamy, vibesy stuff. To be avoided if you're bothered by not getting all the answers. The Devils is a sexy lil romp about nuns letting libidinal tension turn into would-be Satanic psychoses. Feat a very very handsome Oliver Reed. Spoiler alert they massacre him at the end. I love Ken Russell and his bacchanalia. The Royal Tenenbaums is my favorite Wes Anderson, at least from his early career. If u get it u get it. This one has some strong sentimental/emotional power over me, but then it's also pretty funny. The Royal Tenenbaums is The One. Also shoutout to the four Netflix shorts that came out last year, which I think are his best work in years and years and years (though I thought the same thing about Asteroid City).

Ms Laplantine is a musicienne française that makes low key laptop pop that "uses all kinds of acoustic instruments as sources for her sounds: flute, guitar, bass, glockenspiel and melodica to name but a few", to quote a last.fm anon. I crave her stuff during lonely drives or laying in bed after the point I wanted to fall asleep. It lulls me very nicely to where I'm trying to go, and I feel both better and more confirmed in my sadness. I first got into her during a spell being obsessed with Japanese ambient like Hiroshi Yoshimura and Inoyamaland. You might think it's fun and upbeat though! She also does a lot of interesting kinda musique concrete techniques I think. I want to give her money but all her work is on her website for free... hell ya sister rock on
