TNF is a BFD in the outdoors space, but its real special sauce comes from translation. This checkered out, mohair-alike down parka mixes the brandâs heritage alpine DNA with the panache of retro suiting for a frickinâ 70s blow out. So much high-end outerwear is emotionless: black GORE shells, slick matte surfaces. This is the opposite. Itâs a lumpy, textural oversized parka that just reads âwarm.â If youâre on the Beatniks and Goreckis wave, this is your heater.

A few weeks ago, I was hanging out with my Most Fashionable Friend, Matthew, who happens to be a very high-end tailor. I had been too eager to embrace the spring weather, and as we prepared to head to dinner outdoors, I found myself shivering. Matthew, being not only stylish but also chivalrous, offered to lend me his perfectly-hued green vintage North Face puffer, and told me I could keep it âfor the season.â I've been wearing it every day the weather allows, and every time I get a compliment or catch myself looking cool in the mirror, I just think of Matthew and what an absolute gem of a guy he is. The moral of the story is to find ultra-chic, generous friends who will lend you their cool wares and let you rock them for extended periods of time. Itâs cheaper than thrifting, and even more fun.

Oh MAN is this the hidden gem of #clouterwear. Patagoniaâs WornWear ReCrafted program has been serving up sustainable Frankensteins since this time last year, and the garms have only gotten better. While theyâre technically unisex, the boxy fit and c-c-c-crazy colors make these tiny shirt/big pants compatible in a way that disappointingly few âcoolâ coats really are. If your WCW has a snap-front skirt, she needs like four of these. Bonus: every jacket is handmade by LAâs Suay Sew Shop, a woman-led ethical production shop fighting for garment workersâ rights. whatâs your budget range?

Iâm a big proponent of Canada Gooseâbut they did stop using real wolf fur in recent years. Iâd also recommend Boden or Patagonia for lighter weather. The North Face has some good products you could check out like their HMLYN down parka or McMurdo line.
REI usually has some good downs too, but Iâm pretty sure theyâre rotational and differ based on region.
Iâve spent most of my adult life so far all over the east coast and my advice is that if youâre looking for an all-in-one option, yeah, the parkas are good. But I would also recommend having some lighter down jackets, at least one pullover sweater, and some layering, as well.
As for being current college student, Iâll let you know that sometimes, you just say âfuck itâ and go out in your hoodie and a beanie or ear muffs when itâs -10°F and deeply regret it after đ. Also scarves/neck gaiters MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE. ALSO WOOL SOCKS.
And though I canât speak on these brands as of late, my friends recommend LL Bean, Columbia, Lole, and Alpha Industries.

Czech outerwear label Tilak is the hidden gem of superlative shells. Everyone knows Arcâteryx. Some know Norrona. But Tilak flies under the radar. While I love their GORE Pro power armor the Raptor MiG, the brandâs Odin Jacket is my reco for an all-season #techwear jacket. The Odin is made from treated Ventile cotton, a tech that dates back to WWII-era flight suits made to keep downed pilots alive at sea. On this jacket, it keeps you dry and comfortable without the clammy (#clammgod) feeling of a giant membrane. It also looks fucking badass and is only like $300, which is a steal for such a quality piece.

Japanâs Hiroshi Nozawa is a nature-loving design savant who made his name cuttinâ clothes for such tiny, unheard-of brands as uhhh Snow Peak, Fjallraven, and Columbia. Heâs since hung out his own shingle with Norbit, a line designed around notions of âhybridity,â aka, garments that fit both outdoors and urban contexts. I interviewed him for last springâs edition of eyeC (linky) and was so impressed by the craft that goes into every Norbit garm.
