If the heel isnāt walkable then just call it what it is: A tiny art installation for your closet. Unwalkable shoes sit on shelves like small leather sculptures! The very purpose of shoes is to increase your mobility and comfortānot to limit your stamina and plans for the night! Stop wasting money and start engaging with reality instead. You will never wear them. Save the money.

Avoid platform shoes that have no arch. Like the picture below, platforms that are flat across that are over 2 inches get uncomfortable QUICK! Not only that, but the only way to walk is to stomp full-foot-down at a time instead of walking heel-toe, heel-toe like you would in normal shoes/sneaks/heels. And sometimes they begin to lift at the toe seam (or back heel seam, depending on how you walk). If youāre going for higher platform shoes, make sure they have some sort of arch support or something.

Specifically: buying shoes on the realreal. If you live in nyc and are like me, youāre probably really hard on your shoes. Remove the anxiety of scuffing a new pair of by buying someoneās barely worn ones. You get good quality shoes for a regular price AND you wonāt be devastated when you trip up the subway stairs (couldnāt be me!!).
Also, yes, you can get trendy stuff but itās not that discounted. Do some digging in nice brands that are known for making good shoes.
Pro tip: if youāre looking on depop or similar sites, know your Japanese (JP) or cm shoe size. Sometimes itās just marked as CM on the tag. This is the size of your shoe in centimeters and is less arbitrary than other sizing systems!

Ever heard of it?! You need it more than you think you do! Start with spools of 1.5 inch ādouble-facedā satin (Iāve linked my favorite Amazon brand) in the specific colors of: black, crimson, turquoise, goldenrod/marigold, and sort of a icy, slate-gray, periwinkle blue. A deep, wine-red burgundy in .5 inch velvet and an Easter-y, baby pink (or blue or yellow or lilac!) in .25 inch satin will also come in surprisingly handy. Use for beautifying hairstyles, presents, and bouquets of all kinds. Giving someone a single flower is made a thousand times fancier just by tying a bow on it.

Go type āmobilesā into the search bar on Etsy. The results dazzle. And this kind of art takes up zero floor or wall space in an apartment! Matte, metallic, felted, wood, stained glass, sea glass, origami, Calder riffsā¦ Mobiles have it all and Etsy has all the mobilesāgood ones start as low as $35. Technically their correct term is ākinetic sculptures,ā but I call my own collection my houseās āhanging gardens.ā

When I finally got on antidepressants and stopped self-medicating my depression with an life-consuming addiction to amphetamines, I bought, like, 200 bottles of perfume. It wasnāt that before I got on proper medication, I couldnāt smell. It was just that when I was in the thick my depression, smelling something lovely just didnāt bring me any joy. It was too slight a pleasureālike listening to rain or baking cakesāto affect me. The only way I was able to afford 200 bottles of perfume was Dossier. They make dupes of iconic scents at price points of $29, $39 and $49. Their candles are great, too! My favorites are the Diptyque Do Son dupe, the Baccarat Rouge 540 dupe, the Love, Donāt Be Shy dupe (itās Rihannaās signature scent!) and, since I live in Florida now, I also love the Le Labo Santal 33 dupe because people chase me down the street to ask me what it is. Itās so sweet and heartwarming watching Floridians smell Santal 33 for the first time. But obviously I wouldnāt be caught dead wearing that perfume back in New York. Being seen as an offbeat and eccentric weird is too essential my fragile sense of self.
