A majority of the times when my friends see my small collection of candles, I'm always asked why I have a set of tools next to them. This was when I realized that not everyone knows, the best way to put out your candles is to dip the wick inside the hot wax. Covering or blowing out candles after you're done with them will replace your beautifully scented candle with the smell of smoke, so why bother even getting a scented candle?! Another thing that most people don't know is that you should keep your wicks trimmed so that the flame doesn't get too big. This will lead to black flames which will stain the side of the glass. My candle purchases are mostly because of the scent, but the other reason for me is the jar that it comes in. So taking care of my candle means that I'll have a cleaner, re-usable jar once I'm done with it :)

i am admittedly a bit crazy about scent in the home. every corner of the apartment has an opportunity for activation: incense and smudge sticks in the bedroom, reed diffuser in the bathroom, a mini candle in the kitchen for when the lack of ventilation makes the stench of burned food linger and choke up the air. sometimes there is ritual involved in these smells, but walking past the big coffee-scented candle in the living room and stopping in my tracks to light it became so second nature to me that i don't even think about it sometimes.
the issue lies in this conundrum: i like the living room to smell nice, but i'm usually just lighting this on my way to the kitchen or my office and won't be on guard to protect all the wood furniture in our home from the flame. so today, i announced to my housemates and our guest: "i'm going to take a shower, and i'm lighting this candle, but now it's your responsibility. keep an eye on it for me."
why? because a living room candle warms up the room with its glow. it's a warmth that just makes sense for this space, dim illumination, with everyone together in a row on a couch that could stand to be longer. and there is something to be said about the trust involved in lighting a candle. everyone in this room knows what i need in our home to make it function for me, and when i tell them to keep an eye on the big candle in the living room, i know they will, for me.

I don’t know how people read without candles. I’ll read without a candle—in the daytime, at the park, on the train. I do do that. But when I’m really going in. That’s the only way. At night, phone silented and out of reach. Reading for the duration of a candle’s burn. Thing is, in order to really use a candle, you’ve gotta have candles on candles. You’ve gotta be really strapped. Solid holder, with the wide, ashtray-like base, so you can balance it on random things. An armrest. Your lap. I throw down on these 45-count boxes of “perfect flame, clean burning, cotton wick” bistro candles from Bolsius. Polish brand. But you don’t even have to ball out like that, you can just go with the 4-count taper pack. Just make sure you got that solid holder, that’s crucial.

Much more practical than disposable lighters in a lot of different situations (light jar candles that have burnt down near the bottom, stoves with broken ignition, etc). Plus they leave behind nice little boxes you can use to store perfume samples, jewelry, or other trinkets

I’ve never been to Disney as a kid and as I grew older I always felt like I was too old for it. I spontaneously tagged along with my family the day before they left and I think that was the best decision I’ve ever made. I’m a huge fan of Star Wars and Avatar, and even as an adult I think I had the best week of my life and I felt like a kid again. I legitimately had real tears of joy on some of the rides. It’s never too late!

While everyone is raving about their trendy nonstick pans, I’m here to bring the spotlight back to cast iron cookware. There’s a huge stigma around how hard it is to take care of cast irons, but it’s really not bad! You just gotta keep using it, and over time, it basically becomes nonstick. This article has sent off a tangent, and now I am a proud owner of a well-seasoned cast iron pan and griddle.

Antique shops have a special place in my heart because it reminds me of my childhood road trips. When I was little, I always thought antique shops were just useless junk. As I grew older, I’ve learned to appreciate the “junk” a bit more. Browsing through the aisles, they kind of feel like a time machine. My top things to look out for are vintage cameras, dutch ovens, and vintage porcelain.
