I used to only know their demo of the song Good Morning, Captain. A boy from highschool put it on a mix CD he made me, along with some Portishead, Sonic Youth, Eve 6, and Brand New; I would listen to it in my car on the way to volleyball practice. But recently I took a deep dive into everything they did and this album is really something else. If you want the perfect work from home soundtrack for your cold little emo heart, try it out. It’s slow, hard, sad, frantic, and terrifying – everything. Sometimes I really enjoy nauseatingly depressing music even when I’m in a fantastic mood, I don’t know if that’s something I should discuss in therapy; in the meantime, I’ll keep blasting it in my headphones while I’m taking my morning walk to get a coffee.

one of my fave dead-of-winter alt rock albums. melancholy guitar tone and sort of disconnected, disinterested vocals. my top tracks are window seat, smother and winter fog. i’ve also always just loved the album art. (the band’s old name was papergirl and they still appear as such on apple music).

Have been listening to this a lot this week as the weather has cooled down. I think this is the album that really got me hooked on Sonic Youth, before they didn’t click as much to me some reason or maybe I didn’t spend enough time listening. The vibe of the album totally matches the cover, dark, chaotic, and fierce. Highlights for me- Shadow of a Doubt is such an incredible song, so cinematic, atmospheric, dreamlike, with the palpable longing and confusion in Kim Gordon’s voice cutting through. Starpower brings a hypnotic, driven drum beat while the ominous guitar feedback between vocals both provides a perfect accent and gives me chills every time. Expressway to Yr Skull (named Madonna, Sean, and Me on this version of the album) is a classic long ender, a fun fact is that on the vinyl version, the track list shows an infinity symbol as the song length, because the song uses a locked groove, allowing it to play forever after it completes!

Sue me, I love David Lynch. He loves dreams. He said, ā€œThe nervous system functions in a fourth, unique way, as different as dreaming is from sleeping as sleeping is from waking. When you transcend, it's the only experience that lights the full brain on an EEG machine. It's the only experience that utilizes the full brain.ā€ Anytime I have a dream that stays with me when I wake up, I grab my phone and write it down in my notes. Here’s a snippet from a recent one, ā€œI had to put on a gown in the tiniest bathroom. A famous actress grabs my hand and we run to a huge empty room with carpet everywhere. Rolling around on the floor laughing and then she’s crying to me telling me really sad things that are going on in her life. I really wanted to take a picture of the tears on her face but felt like i couldn’t.

I visited Egypt last year in March for the first time with my good friend, Rafik, who grew up in Cairo. A group of 5 of us traveled to the small oasis town of Siwa, which was an 8 hour escapade through the desert in a van, down one road where we got stopped at 6 military checkpoints. They look at your passport and inside your bags, and let you keep going. Siwa is the most magical place I’ve ever been to – the story of Aladdin was supposedly written there, the landscape is straight out of National Geographic, and the people are the sweetest, most chaste souls. We spent 4 days there - I didn’t use the internet once, everyday we went on an adventure somewhere in nature, I woke up every morning at 6am and I ate the best food from a garden.

Anyone who really knows me knows that I love to play games. This one, what are the odds, is one of my go-to’s, especially when you’re in a space where there are alot of strangers and no one’s really doing anything except drink expensive martinis or cheap dive bar beer. We usually play with odds from 1-10, higher risk to dare your friends to do something out of the ordinary. To play, one person presents the ā€˜dare’ for example, ā€˜What are the odds you go up to that guy in the fedora and ask if you can try his hat on?’ Then, on the count of 3, both parties say a number between 1 and 10. If they say the same number, then the dare must be done. The game proceeds and the fun keeps your night exciting til you can’t do it anymore, you usually walk away with some new friends or at least some good stories.
