I was 14. I had started running with an older, much richer girl named Maddie. We were in Friday Harbor at her wealthy grandparents beach house, it was a trip I’ll never forget. One of the nights we were finding something to watch and this movie came up, I texted my mom to ask if it was ok (lied about its rating) and palms sweating told Maddie it was fine to watch. I was sat the entire time. It was the first time I’d really watched sex in a movie, it felt important. Curled up in a bedroom that cost more than I’d ever make, sneaking ice cream from the fridge, watching something that felt risqué. It felt very coming-of-age. And to make it better, when I moved unknowingly to the area it was filmed in, I befriended a movie guy who knows the director of the Spectacular Now and told him what it meant to me on my behalf.
