this whole album is so good. i’ve been listening to it in the morning while i get ready for work. my favorite songs on here are: for free, morning morgantown, and the title track, ladies of the canyon. she’s such a storyteller and i love it.

She really IS back on Spotify, and the full catalog is finally there. She created interesting music throughout her career but this early, "Court and Spark"-era gem is her greatest song IMO (the one that Prince interpolated on The Ballad of Dorothy Parker, low-key one of his best - he was a huge fan). When I can focus enough to conjure my parents back to life, when they were together and living in the same house, this is the song that was playing in the background of their goofy fern-decorated, swimming pool festooned LBC ranch house. The 70s were weird but Joni remains undefeated.

i’ve been humming this song and thinking about it all day for some reason. it’s about her traveling the world, going to all these different countries, but still missing home. while joni isn’t a native californian (she’s canadian) i hear her love and longing for it in this song. her voice is just so delicate yet so powerful at the same and when she hits those runs with the high notes it tickles my brain. i don’t know how she does it man. the lyrics are great as well too, one of the best songwriters to ever live.
this song makes me love my home even more than i already do. even when i lived in texas for a few years i would wish a tornado would come and tear down the trailer park i lived in during tornado season in the summer, literally kneeling on the ground inside of the neighborhood shelter with my palms together, eyes closed, praying to god to let mother nature do its thing so i could go back home to california.
obviously, joni and i were in 2 very different situations…

this movie is amazing. i love how they kept the original dialogue of the play and used it in the movies but still modernized the setting and characters. a lot of movies make romeo and juliet bland and boring but this one is vibrant, with fun wardrobes, religious iconography everywhere, and this movie feels so saturated. leonardo dicaprio is charming as always in this movie and he plays an amazing romeo to pair with precious juliet. i absolutely love the person who plays mercutio, they did an AMAZING job.
the problem with all the other romeo and juliet movies is that they always take themselves too seriously but you have to remember, this was meant for stage theatre and shakespeare was a playwright who loved to be humorous. all of that gets lost in every single other romeo and juliet movie except this one. it’s so fun, i highly recommend.
CAUTION: tears might be shed.
