“do i dare disturb the universe?“
- t.s. eliott, “the love song of j. alfred prufrock”
this is my favorite poem ever. i read this in a.p. lit senior year of high school and it changed me. it’s followed me throughout the years and i always think of this line.

first poem i loved and kept with me as a ripe 7th grader. read over and over to the point where it plays in my head, little things will remind me of it - foggy nights in the city or the ocean in winter or pondering my own mortality - and lines come flowing back
others stuck in my noggin include style by charles bukowski and the sunflower sutra by allen ginsberg. at this point i can probably recite a good number of billy collins works bc ive listened to the recorded album "the best cigarette" approximately 500 times

ANYTHING by whitman but ESPECIALLY song of myself (long but worth it, the final part is so good), crossing brooklyn ferry, hours continuing long, and the untold want. oh and also the love song of j alfred prufrock by by t.s. eliot is NOT overrated and is in fact THAT GOOD

i’ve been humming this song and thinking about it all day for some reason. it’s about her traveling the world, going to all these different countries, but still missing home. while joni isn’t a native californian (she’s canadian) i hear her love and longing for it in this song. her voice is just so delicate yet so powerful at the same and when she hits those runs with the high notes it tickles my brain. i don’t know how she does it man. the lyrics are great as well too, one of the best songwriters to ever live.
this song makes me love my home even more than i already do. even when i lived in texas for a few years i would wish a tornado would come and tear down the trailer park i lived in during tornado season in the summer, literally kneeling on the ground inside of the neighborhood shelter with my palms together, eyes closed, praying to god to let mother nature do its thing so i could go back home to california.
obviously, joni and i were in 2 very different situations…

this movie is amazing. i love how they kept the original dialogue of the play and used it in the movies but still modernized the setting and characters. a lot of movies make romeo and juliet bland and boring but this one is vibrant, with fun wardrobes, religious iconography everywhere, and this movie feels so saturated. leonardo dicaprio is charming as always in this movie and he plays an amazing romeo to pair with precious juliet. i absolutely love the person who plays mercutio, they did an AMAZING job.
the problem with all the other romeo and juliet movies is that they always take themselves too seriously but you have to remember, this was meant for stage theatre and shakespeare was a playwright who loved to be humorous. all of that gets lost in every single other romeo and juliet movie except this one. it’s so fun, i highly recommend.
CAUTION: tears might be shed.
