We miss chronological feeds. We miss forming community through internet friends and groupchats. We miss being fans and spending our lives obsessing over our faves. In an attempt to bring these things back to the surface, we're spending more time on open forums and less time with algorithms. So...... neocities blogs (brittany's here & sameera's here) and discord and perfectly imperfect. And more than anything, we're trying to spend time reminiscing about these days of early spirit and community. Maybe if we talk about it enough, it'll work its way back into existence. This is the only website that I ever truly stumbled upon and kept using. A total relic of the forum era. Anonymous ask and answer, forum, some extremely homemade but fun games, and collaborative pixel art. I have no clue at all how many people use this site, it could be 25 or 3,000. It still feels like a place to go online, and it was really important to me as a forum without the stakes of permanence and publicity that make the modern social internet feel so hostile.
the old-fashioned way, like you would before the entire internet was monopolised into basically three conglomerates. why would you spend all your time on your computer swapping between instagram tiktok youtube pinterest when you could find some of the coolest websites you've never heard about learning information your algorithm would never feed to you!!!!
a good place to start is your favourite artist's websites (not just musicians!) sometimes they have blogs (especially if they're writers) and often they link websites they like.
I also like magazine websites - the face, angel food, hot literati
or craigslist missed connections. I check the new york section all the time
seriously when did everyone get so mean. everywhere i look people are being mean, whether its being racist, homophobic, fatphobic, or catty and snarky. its especially bad on tiktok and instagram like do people not have empathy anymore??
im getting older and things are happening in my life that have shifted my priorities, and because of that i feel more detached from some of the friends that have been the closest to me for years on end. i dont have a problem with any of them specifically, i think this is just the natural progression of things. i had trouble confronting this at first, but accepting that growth also comes with certain sacrifices or loss is just a part of the process.
i, like anyone else now, am incredibly attached to the little computer in my back pocket. however i can feel my mental health decreasing whenever i wake up and instantly go on instagram so iβve begun scrolling on pinterest instead. its still not a great habit but id rather be barraged by cool pictures than the toxins of instagram reels
