My friend runs a Black Environmental Initiative program called Roots For Resilience. They screened "Home Feeling: Struggle For A Community" , a documentary on Toronto's Jane & Finch community in the 1980s. I love learning about local history through grassroots initiatives. It was even special to be watching it in situ – it solidified the meaning of resilience.

A very nice 16mm snapshot following the interactions of community members and actors/filmmakers during Spike Lee's ambitious block-long natural-light takeover of Stuyvesant Avenue in the summer of '88. Required viewing if you helped gentrify this neighborhood obvz.

in-depth documentary about the US far right following three different men from before the 2020 election through to the January 6th insurrection (quite literally—they went and filmed there in person). the filmmakers began work on the film in 2018 and started filming in 2020. it’s really interesting, and certainly very relevant today! also. about half of the showings have Q&As moderated by other filmmakers and activists - tonight’s q&a w the filmmakers (7:30 showing) will be moderated by Laura Poitras (Citizenfour, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed) go see it! (this is in NYC, but i believe they are bringing it elsewhere)

Some will play cult classics, international movies, and other things you'd never get a chance to watch on the big screen otherwise. Even latest releases are usually available at a lower cost. I think that needs to be rewarded and financially supported whenever possible.

As the only true third spaces left in a world where you can hardly leave your house without having to spend money, supporting and utilizing these public services has become more necessary than ever. People don't realize just how many free services are offered by their local branches. From workshops, to free access to online classes and audiobooks, museum passes, movie nights, private study rooms, equipment available to borrow, community building – it's so much more than just borrowing books (which is also cool, btw).
Also a great alternative to loitering at a coffee shop.
