One of the best modern fantasy writers, he writes books about characters and emotions and uses the most intricate and immersive fantasy worlds I've ever seen as simple backdrops to focus on character development.
Regardless of whether you like fantasy or not, his books are another level of phenomenal.
My personal favorite is the original Mistborn trilogy.
