i noticed small chunks were missing from the bougainvillea on my balcony. one day i caught the culprit: a small grey bee that deftly cut out little pieces from the petals and quickly flew them away. i did some research and learned she was a leafcutter bee, they are solitary bees that cut circles from plants and build individual tubular nests (tubular!) inside small nooks in trees or buildings. they are only active for about two weeks a year. after the two weeks were up my plant was left absolutely bald... i'm a bit sad to not have any pink left on my balcony but i love the idea of this stylish and talented bee with some hot pink nests for the summer. I call it my “fairy garden” because it has pretty flowers I know the bees will like, the herbs I cook with, and cute little fairy, gnome, and mushroom statues. It’s never too soon to start prepping for growing a pollinator garden this spring… This is actually a carpenter bee, honestly some of the gentlest bees and they’re so big they’re unintentionally great pollinators lol. Most of my bumblebee phone pictures are a little blurry because they are THE busy bees, so fast.

Do I buy them so I can free them from their evil prison, but feed the system that trapped them there in the first place .. ?

I always stayed up late watching old movies on the tv or playing minecraft on my computer. Eventually my eyes hurt and I would sneak to the kitchen to eat cookies, at this time the house was very still and the only thing you could hear was the ticking of my grandma's clocks. It's funny cause I never heard them during the day but in the middle of the night they echoed everywhere... in the dark the familiar house felt like another world and I would wander around peeking into every room, holding my breath as if the clocks were watching over the house while my grandma slept. In the morning I'd find her in the kitchen in her bata, the only time I ever saw her in this vulnerable state, and we would share some more cookies, the sounds of the radio and the city outside... no more ticking. I have one of her clocks in my house now but I can never hear it !
