Poet, Dancer, Vocalist, film maker - all round genius. I discovered Meredith Monk's music while working in a record store and someone who wanted to get rid of a few records dumped some of hers outside the store. The store owner had no interest in keeping them and so I took them home with me. Iāve been hooked ever since.Ā

Vocalist Patty Waters straddles approaches that are something like a lounge jazz and a vocal avant-gardism, singing to stripped down instrumentals playing familiar then dissonant intervals, often ones that feel just slightly off of what you expectāthe effect is something like holding an old photograph in your hand and noticing the material distortions. What sounds sentimental in a Nat King Cole or King Moody croon, becomes haunting or grin under Patty Waterās command.
I especially get that effect from this album, College Days, in which her voice warmly vibrates at the center, with the instruments falling into the background. Itās perfect rainy day music from her, but this album also has a lot of her screaming and using her voice in a remarkable way, it definitely draws comparison to someone like Meredith Monk, where breathe voice and tone become their own force. This track Wild is the Wind is the noisiest and reminds me of Arthur Russell at some points.

A severely underrated legend and lyrical genius. She also is a visual artist and mother - so she can basically do it all and I find this very inspiring.
Her storytelling is unmatched. My favorite album of hers is Alas I Cannot Swim (which Iāve linked), however she has quite a bit of really great music to check out. Her upcoming album, Patterns in Repeat, comes out in October.

I think yoko is more influential to me then the Beatles she gets memed on so hard for no reason. genius use of minimalism in this album tho someone who isnāt afraid to be annoying and respect her a ton for that! Also love her films and art work highly recommend

Shameless plug but I actually donāt know how life would be without this. A never ending broadcast of ambient, meditation and transcendental music. I have this playing through my place all day every day at varying volumes - sometimes even when Iām watching tv it stays on as a low hum. It creates a feeling of calm and serenity as soon as I step into my home and prepares me for the world when I step out.Ā
