I used to use a dying private app as my only social media platform that had been abandoned by its developers except to keep the servers running and everybody in the community would constantly say how much they wished they could just pay someone a subscription fee to keep it functional and maybe even moderated. we would often lament that we didn’t know who had access to our data and I discovered at one point that all of the images we posted and thought were private were literally hosted on public Imgur URLs lol.
I started paying for PI.FYI out of a feeling of guilt for the strain that is surely placed on their servers by the sheer volume and frequency of my posts, but it also gives me a sense of having a stake in PI.FYI as a community. Tyler and staff are so incredibly responsive and active which is a blessing, and I think their labor should be fairly compensated (in addition to just contributing towards operating costs of keeping the site up)—especially in light of the fact that there are no ads on here aside from their sponsored engagements!

as someone who runs the social media for an organization, i think i’m realizing i find so much solace in pi.fyi not only because i believe in its mission, but also because i get to be just me! no worrying about creating a pi.fyi company strategy. no switching accounts. no tracking interactions. for someone who works in social media, i’ve found that the absence of all those things is something i’ve become incredibly appreciative of. i love all you people and this community

The Internet used to be a place we didn't have constant access to like we do now, and it's almost hard to remember that world. Months ago, I deleted all my social media apps to try and lower my screen time. When that wasn't enough, I got a flip phone. When that stopped being conducive to my quality of life in our "smartphone or bust" chronically online society, I returned to the social media appless iPhone I had before. I'm not an "I don't have social media person," though. I use Instagram.com and Tumblr.com and Pinterest.com and it's great. I "go online" exclusively on my laptop, and I think pi.fyi is such an awesome website! It's social networking more than it's social media to me, and I'm not sure how many other sites I acknowledge the distinction with. Shout out to everyone on here (and the staff ofc). This is a very cool cyberspace to occupy.

My dad teases me about how when I was a little kid, my favorite thing to do when I was on the landline phone with somebody—be it a relative or one of my best friends—was to breathlessly describe the things that were in my bedroom so that they could have a mental picture of everything I loved and chose to surround myself with, and where I sat at that moment in time. Perfectly Imperfect reminds me of that so thanks for always listening and for sharing with me too šŸ’Œ
