since moving to a brand new city for grad school, all my best homies are long-distance and phone calls/facetime have got me through this past year. the first thing I did when I woke up today was ring my friend for a call we had planned, and it really started off my day CORRECT. what a blessing it is to have people on this earth to share the minute details of life with <3

My best friend and I live in different cities and live very busy lifestyles, so we unfortunately don't see eachother very often. A few months ago, we realized that we both drive home from work at the same time, so we started calling eachother while we drive. This has been awesome because that 20 min window right after we leave our offices has transformed from a boring drive to a daily gossip/therapy sesh and we don't have to spend money like we would have to if we just hung out.

one of my friends is currently living across the country from me because of college. he's been back in town since late december, and ive seen him a lot since then. hes always been the sort of friend i can talk to for hours on end about nothing in particular.
tonight, we played mgs 4 with a group of four or five others, then later hopped on a friend group discord we were both playing different games, and weren't paying too close attention to our own or each others. we talked about so much i can barely remember now, even just a couple minutes after disconnecting.
some of my favorite nights recently have just been playing a game and being on call with a friend (both him and others). nothing bombastic, nothing to riotously funny; just simple conversation to fill the air and get a few laughs.

being sincere is in, thinking you’re always the most interesting person in the room is OUT.
take the opportunity to learn from this random human you have crossed paths with at the function. make a big impact with a little, casual convo. what are they into? how did they get into their line of work? what did they eat that day? what is their biggest fear? (lol) small talk is only shallow if you let it be.
tell someone working in a super busy place that they’re doing great and you hope they get a breather soon. compliment an outfit you like when you see it. tell someone when you notice their beautiful smile. quick interactions =/= insignificant

very satisfying to prolong the life of things in a world where not very many things are made to last. just applied renovating cream to my blundstones. cleaning my car, sewing up holes or tears in clothing, trimming the wicks of candles, and using slip-on covers for old books fall into this category too
