It's a western, but it's more relentlessly grim and ferociously cruel than any horror novel I've ever read. The very same reasons I think Robert Eggers (The VVitch) and Ari Aster (Hereditary) have made some of the best horror films since The Exorcist (1973).

Honestly got this book because I kept seeing those “10 most evil villains” YouTube videos. I always find that with books, the first half is a SLOW BURN for me. It will take me months to read the first half and days to finish the second - American psycho, 1984, brave new world etc.
This book is slow atm 😫 but giving it a chance

Gerald’s Game by Stephen King — his scariest book (for me) and the ending still haunts me. 10/10, big content warnings. It by him is also really great, tis 1000 pages though.
The Island by Adrian McKinty is a fabulous murder thriller that actually had my heart racing.
Blood Sugar by Sascha Rothchild is not Scary per se, but really well written. The narrator is a murderer accused of a murder she didn’t commit!
Kill for Love by Laura Picklesimer is not scary, but plenty of gore.

The Corpse Grinders (1971) is about a cat food company that adds people meat to their product. And, naturally, the cats love it.
