maybe it’s just my personality, I tend to avoid intruding on others’ space. Most of the time, I just exchange a few words and that’s it. But this trip to the South of France was such a beautiful coincidence. Last Friday, the five of us were exploring the cliffs in La Ciotat. Vincent borrowed a snorkel mask from a German girl in a couple we had just met. Later, the guy from the couple came up to the rocks to sunbathe while we were taking turns going into the water to take pictures. When Vincent returned the snorkel mask, he chatted with them a bit. I had already guessed they were from Northern Europe or Germany, they didn’t have the typical “southern” look.
Then we drove to another spot and saw an old fisher man fixing his fishing net. We talked to him briefly, and he told us where the toilet was. Just as we got there, we saw the same guy again standing at the entrance. He said his girlfriend was inside, and somehow we just started chatting, and ended up having a super fun and but non superficial conversation. Turns out they live in their car and shower by the beach. That’s honestly so impressive.
They suggested we go for a drink together, and from the ice cream stand, to the burger spot, to a bar till almost 2 o’clock in the mornin. we talked and laughed so much. had the best conversations with Mathilda, it was just so joyful. We planned to take the boat together the next day, but we couldn’t make it at the end. The day after, my sister suggested we ask them if they wanted to go to the beach again. We ended up hanging out for about two hours, and I had another great talk with Anton, so many interesting perspectives from daily life to politics. In the end, we didn’t get to say goodbye properly (so so sad), but we waved at them from afar cause the parking lot was about to charge us more and they swag so far far away!
genuinely hope there will be a next time. It’s rare to meet people so spontaneously and feel such a genuine connection.
