Okay so a little bit of backstory is needed:
I'm half white and half Chinese, and I was born in Shanghai back in 2007, when there weren't very many black people in China, and I had never really met anyone who wasn't white or Chinese until I moved to America at the age of two. However, my parents DID watch the news, where soon-to-be president Barack Obama was constantly getting air-time, more than enough for him to be seared into baby me's mind.
When I was about one, my parents decided that we would fly to America for Thanksgiving so my dad could see his family and I could meet my grandparents. This was my first time leaving China, and on the plane, I got super excited because I thought I saw the newly elected president of the United States, Barack Obama, sitting a few aisles away from me. I screamed out Obama's name a few times, trying to get his attention.
Except, of course, it wasn't Obama πππ It was just some random black guy, and I had never known anyone outside of my race before besides seeing Obama on the TV. Thankfully, the guy was chill about it, and gave me a fist bump! My parents still tell me this story all the time (I do, too).
