1984 meets Orange is the New Black in this dystopian masterpiece centered around female protagonists. If you’re looking for the intersection between futuristic government surveillance and the immigrant experience, look no further.
Inspirational, tragic, horrifying, and slightly close to home for anyone who could be seen as a ‘high-risk’ individual by the governing body.
Laila Lalami spells out the consequences and overlap between casual racism, unchecked capitalism, and the industrial prison complex.
10/10 Best read of 2025 so far, hopefully not a deeply troubling prediction of the future.

Severance by Ling Ma - Candance Chen grapples with her unfulling life and job as a virus begins to spread and turns people into these zombie-like indivuals. Released in 2018 but somehow encapsulates a lot of that COVID quarantine panic.

You don’t need to suffer to prove that you’re a good person. You don’t have to stay with the job that makes you question yourself and you don’t have to keep dating that person you’re not quite clicking with. If something feels off then it probably is. I’m not advocating for immediately abandoning your responsibilities and throwing caution to the wind; but in our hearts we know when something is working and when it isn’t.
That thing called intuition is your soul, and you can trust it.
